So by now, most of you have probably heard of the rumors about Nintendo's next console, apparently titled "Project Cafe" (http://ca.kotaku.com/5792670/the-great-big-wii-2-rumor-round+up).  According to rumors it is to be at least as powerful as the current PS3/360 (http://ca.kotaku.com/5792165/new-nintendo-console-debuting-at-e3-launching-in-2012-more-powerful-than-xbox-360-and-ps3), be capable of operating in HD, and make use of an entirely new controller focusing less on motion control and more on traditional gaming -- although it may contain a built-in touch-sensitive HD screen and accelerometer (http://ca.kotaku.com/5792472/wii-2-controller-like-an-ipad-with-buttons-says-a-french-person).  In addition, it may employ Blu-Ray discs as its primary media format (http://wii.nintendolife.com/news/2011/04/rumour_wii_2_has_blu_ray_drive_controller_contains_a_screen) and be fully backwards-compatible with the Wii (and presumably the Gamecube).  If rumors are accurate it is to be debuted by Nintendo at this year's E3 and ultimately released in winter 2012.

honestly, i wouldn't mind if most of it turned out to be true, nothing is particularly outrageous or worrying about most of the rumors

well, aside from what is arguably the most significant one, which is that it is to be released in 2012 smithicide;

I was hoping this generation would at least last a few more years as Sony and Microsoft wished for, and that we wouldn't even be hearing of new consoles until late 2012, but Nintendo's release of Project Cafe may force Sony and Microsoft to announce new consoles early as well and end this underdeveloped generation prematurely. awdood;

i feel as if it's only just started picking up and there is still much untapped potential, but it seems as though focus is already shifting away from this still-developing generation :'(

and then there's the fact that i'm not yet ready to spend more money on a brand new set of expensive toys goowan

Hey maybe I can actually enjoy owning a Nintendo console again. Although I might be too busy to invest in one by then...

I'll start with the rumours.  I doubt that it'll have either an HD screen in the controller [a screen is imaginable, but seeing as how the 3DS still uses a resistive touchscreen, I'd expect the screen on the controller to probably be about the quality of the original DS screens] or a Blu-Ray drive as Nintendo hasn't even given the Wii proper DVD functionality which they promised way back when. 

And I'd be fine as long as it doesn't try to surpass the PS3 and Xbox 360 in ability and functionality.  I guess it doesn't bother me too much.  Nintendo has shown with the Wii that they were okay with making an underpowered system to sell at a high profit margin with the Wii and post-DS Lite revisions, so if it uses already established [read: cheap] parts used in the other two they'll just continue this trend.

And I wouldn't say that all hope is lost for this generation.  There are still several far off big-name projects for the PS3 and Xbox 360 that need to be released.

i should mention that i'm not sure i buy all the rumours either, as it does seem unlikely that nintendo would use blu-ray discs, and a motion- and touch-sensitive controller with an HD screen embedded into it sounds extremely expensive, but the most believable and most worrying rumour to me is that they would consider releasing a new console as early as 2012 at all befuddlement

I've thought before that maybe Nintendo just put out a relatively cheap system to make a lot of money off of it and then put out something a lot better. And If it goes backwards compatible to the Gamecube I will definitely buy it at some point. Also, I guess Nintendo won't be releasing a new console at the same time as the other people for a while now.

Hey, I think it's cool that they're going back to the traditional use of controllers. They should just stick with their own franchises and platforms since they're good at maintaining them. I just think that the more they add new shit, the more they screw up.

Still, I'm probably gonna go with the next Xbox. Although I would like to see more competition in the next generation of gaming.

I don't even get why you're complaining about the release thing. When the Wii came out, it was already not much far ahead of the last generation in terms of horsepower. Also, while the 360/PS3 were designed to last for around 8 or so years, the Wii was intended for a typical console run, which is around 5 years. By the time the new system will allegedly come out, it will have been 6.
I am almost positive it won't have an HD screen, but I could very much see it having a blu-ray drive. A more traditional controller could be nice.

I think with Nintendo's recent drop in sales, they've realized they need to start marketing a little more to their core audience, and "gamers" would not put up with it having the graphics of 360 launch titles. Nintendo doesn't emphasize graphics, but they're not idiots. And again, the 3DS seems to have pretty good graphics for a handheld, almost as good as the Wii. There's no way Nintendo won't advance somewhat. It's not 2007, the PS3 isn't bleeding-edge technology anymore, parts are a good bit cheaper now, and the "next generation" has been out for some time now.
And stop the crap about Sony fanboys and Nintendo fanboys. I grew up on Nintendo and I still love them, but fanboys of any variety suck. n_u

I voted yay, but I honestly don't care what they do. I doubt I'll be investing money into another console anytime soon. I'm content with my 360, and I barely even play that anymore as it is.

Aside from that, Nintendo would have to make itself more attractive to developers before it can attract hardcore gamers again.

we've been over this already - rushing things just lessens the time that developers have and thus we'll end up with underpowered competitor consoles and terrible, underdeveloped games to start with (though that may happen anyway lol)

besides, i'm personally really not ready for the temptation to throw down so much cash on a console again already

Yes.  And launching it in the same calendar year as its new handheld system will almost surely mean one of them will see absolutely northing from Nintendo itself during the crucial launch period and time when ports start to slow down.~

Well Nintendo seems to release a new console about every six years so this would be about in line with that schedule.

Yeah, that's true. I didn't even think that it would force devs to rush with games. It is possible that development has been going on for a while though. Nintendo's obviously been making Project Cafe for a while, but rumors/news just came out now. Maybe developers have been hard at work as well?

I'm hoping it stays closer to the $350 area. If so, I might be able to get it after Christmas.  Oh god, I think I'm getting a 3DS and Project Cafe within 12 months. ;_;

i hope this doesnt ruin the ps4 cos ps 1 + ps 2 where the best!!!!!

The only problem, as far as it's library was concerned, was that it was littered with one note minigame compilations.

I enjoy my wii wholeheartedly and it is the only system I play now.

I think recently Nintendo's started to realize that they can't just try to appeal to everyone forever, and that they've been ignoring their fans a little too much. I think they're already showing signs of improvement and hopefully the next system will continue this.

The Wii has as many games worth playing as any other console, it's just that it's also bombarded with shovelware which takes up a lot more space on store shelves than the few decent games. myface;

also rhythm paradise is scheduled to come out this summer in japan AWESOME

iirc, Sony and M$ were going for the long haul, like 2014 or something. And the Wii's tech is waaay behind compared to them, I don't even see this as a new generation but like a wii update, what the wii should've been, HD and shit.

I have played it. I am currently doing a playthrough of SMG, though it's not very far in. (I started playing my Wii again a few days ago).

The first M&L was decent, I suppose. The second was meh, the babies didn't enhance the experience either. I've never been too large a fan of RPG's.

what would be awesome is if the 3ds could wirelessly link up and perform as a controller.kind of like with the gba and the gcn. but without a cord/with games that actually support that feature.

Giant controllers are always a pain. The Dreamcast was no exception, nor was the original Xbox, and the same will go for Cafe. But the Dreamcast in particular had a rather convoluted organization of buttons on its controllers and were actually bigger than they even needed to be, even with the VMU inputs.

Of course, the worst part about the Dreamcast was that there were no fucking games for it beyond about 15 or so good ones, but that was more the fault of there being no third-party support.

I'm guessing this thing won't have any buttons aside from power, so a 6-inch screen will not be very big for a game controller.
