No, you can't ever rename Pokémon protagonists.

As far as I can tell you also can't change the skin color at any point, but you can change hair color, hair style, and eye color.

i think i'd rather use the former for this game

after all, it's not set in japan so something that's not overly region-specific just seems better and my weeaboo impulses require me to name her after another character

Oh yeah, I never mentioned it, but I finished the Elite Four on Tuesday.
My Pokédex currently has about 270 owned.

Also, the canon name for the female character in this game is "Serena". The name for her based on game titles is Yvonne (and for the male it's Xavier).
