r4 or m3?

I'm not sure which one is better, the m3 ds simply or the r4. I had the m3 but then my dog killed it... I'm not sure which one I should ask for my birthday. And please don't say stuff like "Well they are basically the same, they even come from the same manufacturer." because I know. I want to know the differences. Thank you.
