I found it interesting that you were doing your own music for your video game. I would have guessed that most people who are mostly independent would use someone else to compose the music because that's an area that's very different from the rest of the process to create.
So I'm wondering what kind of musical background you have, if any. If you haven't had any, then what was the foray into songwriting like for you?
And when do you think you'll have an alpha or beta build done?

I have zero musical background. I realized I had to get into it because there's no way I could get the music I'd want/need for my game unless I paid somebody, so I eventually just had to make stuff.
I'm not talented in any way, but I feel like I'm slowly getting better. I can upload a few of the songs I've made in a minute.

Overly ambitious for a person with less than $100 million in the bank.
But if you put your ideas into a cartoon with good animation and good voice acting, I'd definitely watch it. A game I'm not sure about, because it all depends on how well you can not just tell a story but experience it, and there's also the fact that I'm completely sick of turn-based RPGs.

is there a particular reason you hold yourself to such rigid standards on everything?
for example, if i were to compare our game tastes, you'd hate a lot of what i enjoy, yet many of my favorite games are favorites of yours as well - meaning you really only seem to like the best of the best and don't care about the rest.
yet for some reason i seem to find enjoyment in most games i play
is there a point in your life when you started trying to keep such rigid standards? do you really hate things as much as you say you do, or do you just exaggerate a lot? is it just a natural thing that you for some reason tend to dislike so many oft-considered "good" games?
serious questions, just curious. they're things i was thinking about. no answers like "i just have superior taste" or some asinine shit like that.

Physics will be a bit more limiting than plain old mathematics, but physics majors have higher starting wages (http://www.aip.org/statistics/trends/reports/fall09a.pdf). If you stick with physics and do well, I'd encourage you to do it at the graduate level.

I'm not really sure, but I was always a poor kid who didn't have much of anything. I'd maybe afford one or two games a year, and if it sucked, I would just keep playing last year's game. Maybe it stems from that.
Or maybe it's that I'm an easily angered person and one minor flaw can be enough to piss me off. You could make the greatest game ever, and if there was just one shitty 2 minute escort mission, I'd say the game overall was crappy.
Things can also bore me easily, so things need to be pretty unique to impress me or they need to be extremely intense without being overwhelming. That's why I rarely complain about shmups, and the only ones I really dislike are the extremely slow ones and the ones with bullshit deaths or a crappy respawn system. R-Type and Gradius are classics of the genre, but I don't like them too much for these reasons. One bad mechanic (like being sent back in the level after dying in a shmup) will far outweigh all the good to me, because I can't possibly enough anything when I'm annoyed.

Not much. We both like programming but our areas of interest are pretty much complete opposites. [glow=black,2,300]But I still think you're one of the five coolest people here[/glow]
I think a good 2/3 of CS majors here are like me in that they just really, really love programming and technology and love understanding how everything works. Some people are there just for the jobs, and it's obvious when they complain about assignments being too hard. I think all the assignments are fun.
[glow=black,2,300]YES.[/glow] You're the only person here who I could trust to actually finish a job, and there's also the fact that you know what you're doing.
Not so much CS specifically (mostly linear algebra I'd suppose), but object collision and proper handling of it is something I'm extremely interested in. Every single game out there has some sort of bug involving things going through walls or moving strangely around corners and it's something I always fiddle with in my games. Even if you can perfectly detect a collision, how do you respond to it? Do you want to respond to it the same way every time? There's also the fact that accurate collision handling is slow and you have to take shortcuts and it becomes an interesting problem. befuddlement
also i'm becoming interested in image data manipulation (and recently spent some time fiddling with graphical effects in my game) and i'd like to get into sound manipulation but i don't even know where to begin with that
Javascript is my absolute favorite. It's extremely flexible and I really can't complain about the language at all. It just sucks that it's restrained to browsers.

One problem was that it had the smallest amount of time given. 20 or 25 minutes I think.
Another problem was that there were about 30 questions, meaning you had to solve these questions pretty quickly.
The third problem was that I was given these convoluted charts that gave about four types of data on one diagram and you constantly had to look back at what each item represented and how you converted the data to what they were looking for.
It wasn't necessarily difficult, but they didn't give you anywhere near enough time. akudood;

I moved to a new town and this one "loser" kid befriended me. He was really nice.
Since this was 6th grade and every class needed that one loser that they could all agree to hate, this kid happened to be that one. People thought I was fairly cool as a new kid, but once they saw I was talking with this "loser", they all began to hate me too.
For a while I was becoming pretty cozy with the loser group and didn't give a shit that people were telling me to stop associating with him. I had a couple loser friends, but to me they were cool. I could actually have
real conversations with them about things I enjoyed and I didn't give a shit. They were great people.
Over time I started becoming good friends with this one kid who played football. I thought he was the coolest shit ever and we also had similar hobbies, so we bonded pretty well. Of course, being a sixth grader, he just had to hate people of a lower social status and he started nudging me to be more hateful towards that other kid. I did. I just randomly told the other people of the loser group that I'm not friends with that kid anymore and that they need to stop being friends with him if they want to be friends with me. They obviously knew it was a dick move, but they went along with it and left him to eat alone for the rest of the semester. The most depressing part about this is that he obviously would've taken me back if I stopped being a dick because he was a
nice kid.
The year after that the loser group pretty much told me to fuck off and got their little group back together without me. I was pissed, but it was my own fault.
and then for the next few years i'd try hard to fit in with the "cool kids" but i secretly couldn't put up with their inane bullshit and i hated myself for it akudood;

if not too personal, does your depression come at "random" times? or does an event have to take place, or thoughts that intense at certain times, because of certain factors?

I pretty much never get sad for no reason. Being at home alone for a long time can cause me to lose all motivation to do anything, and there have been other problems in the past couple days that have made things worse.
many people on boyah are legitimately depressed and my state isn't at all comparable to theirs
do you think im a cool kid? :3

I know that I don't know your current situation, may not know the depths of it. I'm fallacious as shit, illogical, and limited in knowledge. I don't intend to offend with the content below. Most of what I'm going to say is within my perpective, opinion, schema, etc.. Most things I "command," are just suggestions. Below is also what I suggest to anybody facing some sort of depression.
I feel like you're going to lose yourself soon, Lawlz. I don't clearly know why- it's just a feeling. Your posts concern me at times- a few others', too.
I suggest that you try to push yourself to do things you've never done- anything. Maybe even getting help from somebody in your college campus, somebody that can try to push you when you're feeling like "shit." I feel sorry for people who don't take advantage of advisors, or teachers that are willing to talk, just any kind of support that's offered. Try going to a store you've never gone to. Walking to places- the longest walks. Try to focus on how to "fix" problems instead of focusing on how they may affect your life. Consider the things you cannot control and things you can- this will be the most important. Realize things you truly don't want to participate in- and realize what you actually want to do- other than staying at home- unless it is what you actually want.
I assume it's difficult to push yourself when you're in these kind of states- so when you feel the most willing to do anything- take that opportunity, because it's a rare feeling.
An action I feel that's not truly taken to its fullest potential, is seeking out things.
Note consequences, too.

the thing that's currently bothering me is (hopefully) a temporary problem that'll be gone in a couple of days
Whenever I'm not sad, which is 98% of the year, I'm improving myself or working towards some sort of goal. Most of my biggest issues involve other people.
EXCITING NEWS LAWLZ
That project I was talking about, he's actually majoring in all those technical degrees and programs games on the side for fun.
Neat.
Now get to work on your first game like I told you to.
art's fine although i do think shitty art exists
art majors are worthless because college is not only supposed to teach you skills but teach you how to continue learning, which is why science degrees are extremely valuable. what the fuck does an art major hope to accomplish during their time there or after
seriously name 5 good artists who majored in art. pretty much every major scientist in the past century or two went to college and actually got something out of it and continued their research there while good artists are random people with talent or something important to say

I had a manager several years ago say that art school is nice in that it will teach you to "get into a routine" with your art, like making is a habit to sit down and do it. But then again if you have to practice sitting down and doing it instead of doing it out of sheer "enjoyment", you should maybe rethink what you're doing.
also what art do you enjoy and what do you think is shitty.

whatever this dumbass makes and anything like it is shit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson_Pollock
if it requires some degree of thought or emotion, then i have a little more respect for the work. it doesn't necessarily mean i'll like it, but it's still art. when you're flinging paint on a canvas and selling it for millions, then the only art you've mastered is conning idiots
Video games are art.
Pollack seems to be a dividing line for many. I think I appreciate it because I think of art (at the risk of sounding incredibly pretentious) as a kind of communication. Sometimes you can't use words or sounds to convey what's going on in you, so you have to draw things or create something to channel whatever's plaguing you. Pollack was a deep alcoholic and some speculate that he had bipolar disorder. Each piece is kind of an explosion of whatever was going on in his head. though his earlier work has more discernible figures in it. Also I'm not sure he actually made millions off of his paintings during his lifetime. I can understand the disdain for his work though.
(http://www.moma.org/collection_images/resized/989/w500h420/CRI_211989.jpg) this is a cool pollack piece imo

I look exactly the same as 3-4 years ago. Only difference is that I'm finally starting to grow some facial hair. goonish

QuoteAt age 16, Picasso set off for the first time on his own, but he disliked formal instruction and quit attending classes soon after enrollment.
On Sun Ra:
QuoteHe was a music education major, studying composition, orchestration, and music theory, but after a year, he dropped out.
i guess dali graduated but the majority of big artists dropped out, had a non-arts major, or didn't go at all

he still went to college for it didn't he. just learn what you want then drop out. the only need for art college is to build up contacts w/ other ppl so you can take advantage of their Friendliness to progress your own career

but pretty much no major artist actually graduated with an art degree
and it seems like a good number left college because they were bored
the point is that majoring and graduating with an art degree means nothing because the degree will get your nowhere. in any field knowing people is the most important thing but with sciences you're given more flexibility
