2 had a way better chao garden and getting rid of the overworld, amy, and big were all good calls, but god tails/robotnik's section's were so horrible and the story was just horrid
still i don't hate 2 really
1 had good levels/areas and i kinda liked some of the  story. it wasn't great but i loved it as a kid and even now i  still enjoy it

The chao garden was the only superior item in SA2.

Everything from controls to story to levels were better in the first.
