Probably since the complaints stemmed from Smash Run, the 3DS exclusive one player mode and also from character models being too small in 4 on 4 battles. Which might be why you can only have 3 characters in a match in the demo

there are many techniques that require many inputs in a very small amount of frames (i.e. jump canceling shines has to be done on the first few frames). It isn't pretentiousness, it just isn't possible to play when there is lag.
