New years here. With many different games being released and rereleased, what were your favorite 2014 gaming experiences? Doesn't have to be new games, could be Tetris.

For me 2014 was all Nintendo games, and my large backlog of videogames. Been playing a lot of multiplayer Wii U games with my gf. SMW3D is her favorite, though I prefer Mario Kart 8 or SSB4. I played through Resident Evil 2, 3, and CV:X which was long awaited. For a long time they've been taunting me. I really enjoyed those games. Finished off this year with a PS4 w/ Destiny, Walking Dead S1&2, and P.T.; Really enjoy Walking Dead, my gf started getting all into the story within the first few minutes of watching me play, really fun to play with someone else and talk out decisions. It's a choose your own adventure style game. Destiny is good but repetitive and lacking, so pretty. P.T. was awesome, I cannot contain my excitement for Silent Hills... I'm glad Silent Hill was taken by the Japanese. Haven't touched the American Silent Hill games...

Nice, I gotta fix up my PCs though I hardly play games on them. Which ones you plan on playing?

I'd easily wait for a good PS4 deal which is bound to come by the time there are good games on it. Got mine for 350 w/ Destiny, was going to wait longer but the deal was good and it was xmas money.

pretty much playing FFXIV and watching it go from something that was an alright game to one of my favorites. I'd say it was a good and fun year for me.

How does it stack up against the other FF games?

2014 was a good year for me. I probably traveled to at least one Melee tournament a month, and also entered Project M at quite a few of them.
I put a TON of work building up our local scene, and hosted consistent weekly Smash fests and occasional tournaments on my university's campus. Our weekly fests would be anywhere from 20-40 people, and our tournaments had upwards of 60 entrants. I also hosted a larger tournament that I advertised the rest of WA and Canada that had over 100 unique entrants, and some of the best Melee players in the state.
I also become much tighter with my core group of smash friends, playing for a few hours just about every other day. As a result of this, I have improved drastically, both on a technical and theory-based level. It is amazing how you can play a game so much for so long and still have huge realizations about how competitive play works.
I also dropped Marth as my main in Melee (had been playing him solely for ~3 years) and picked up Falco. My strengths lay in my technical abilities over my mind games, which is great for Falco, since i can just short hop laser -> dair -> double shine -> waveshine -> double shine on shield lol. After probably 6 months of practicing Falco tech skill alone in my room (on the 20xx training mod of melee), and getting bodied by my friends who I was otherwise comporable with when I had played Marth, I am finally getting good placements again, which is quite satisfying.

I also took a small haitus from Melee from around May-August and focused solely on Zelda in Project M. I was probably the best in Bellingham at P:M during that time period, but with some really unfortunate Zelda nerfs upon the release of 3.5, I've changed gears and am only working on my Falco in Melee.

We have also revamped our Player Ranking (PR) system and have a fairly accurate dynamic list of our best players, which is great encouragement for our members to improve. I am also planning another large-scale tournament for later in January, and just about all of the top 10 players in WA are coming, as well as some big names from BC.

Have also been playing Spelunky, FTL, and as of lately, Nethack on the side. I also beat Lifeforce with a friend of mine which was fun. Oh, and we are currently working through Gradius V, which we will probably be doing for a while lol.

TL;DR Melee and spliffs giggle;

It's an MMO so you can't really compare it to the others.

Whats the biggest benefit of Project M over Melee?

Oh I wasn't aware, I love mmorpgs but won't ever play one until I get another lifetime or my rl friends and family join.

Is there a sense of community online?

Depends on the server you go on, some of them are really quiet, some are more active. From what I've heard Excalibur, Gilgamesh, Hyperion, and Balmung are the most active. I'm personally on Balmung so I can confirm that it's pretty busy. Though there are other servers with lots of people on it that are a bit less busy. I used to be on Exodus which apparently has the highest number of total players on it, but isn't active at all.

@reaper
more viable characters for sure. in melee, only ~8 of the 26 characters are viable on a competitive level. project m has 41 characters, all of which are (arguably) competitively viable. it's also cool because a lot of those are melee (or brawl characters) that have been rebalanced. for example, Sethlon, the best Roy player in Melee, still isn't that great at Melee since Roy is meh. But he quickly rose to become one of the best PM players because he already had so much Roy knowledge, and they kept the base character the same

That's cool, it's a damn shame most vidyagaems aren't balanced properly. Though it's extremely difficult to do so without the proper support and continuous updates.

How much better did they do on SSB4? Or are you ignoring that game competitively for now?

strongbad

Yeah, although I almost prefer having 8 viable characters as opposed to 41. Like, so much of Project M is knowing how to play against your opponent's character, and you'll see examples of arguably higher skilled players losing because they didn't know the matchup.

In Melee, the individual matchups are extremely developed and therefore much more clear.

I haven't delved into SSB4, since this will probably be my last year in the country (and therefore the Smash scene) for a while so I want to put everything into Melee. The general consensus is that Smash 4 is better than Brawl was competitively, but doesn't share the same intricacies as Melee/PM to make it really good (that last part is more subjective). Still seems good and it is cool watching top players from Melee/Brawl show the game's potential.

yup lol
one of my friends was the top ranked brawl player in wa when there was still an active scene for it, and he shares the same sediments (and is really good at melee/pm too so its okay i guess)
