anyone know how to steal the silver ring out of the lockbox in Riften while that guy is distracting the crowd for you? I can unlock the lockbox fine, but I can never steal the ring without getting a bounty which fails the quest.
I'm going to look around for answer, maybe I need to use like an invisibility pot or something.

I really don't know, I did this quest the first time with no problems.

but um more info:
i was croutching
it was night
my stealth was at like 50 at the time, and it's boosted quite a bit by that first perk in the skill tree and my boots give me a bonus as well
my lockpicking must have been around 35 but i don't think that's a factor

I decided to fast travel to the shadow stone, activate it. Then start the mission, opened the lockbox, then went invisible to steal the ring, and it worked! I just planted it on the guy, now I'm pickpocketing everyone else that is standing around. Woo!

apparently i need to make a distraction of some sort so he can open the door

at least reloading my previous file allowed me to kill a dragon

yeah, this might be one of those games
but that particular instance wasn't one of those, that was just me being an idiot
i'm about 28 hours in and i've yet to have to do that, so it might not be so bad after all
which is a good thing since i only keep one file

you didn't have to actually pass the quest to further the thieve's guild quest line.

I have yet to successfully do that quest and get into the thieve's guild every time
