the inflatable mattress probably isn't meant to be used every day for weeks in a row and usually feels like a leaky water mattress with a huge dip in the middle by the time we wake up (destroys my back), but the futon is nice

one side is firm, the other side is soft. i sleep on the firm side, i don't really like sinking into beds and it's better for my back anyway. similarly, i've always used firm pillows as well.
