I listen to music when I'm riding my bike and that pair just doesn't look like they could stand up to it.

I suppose if you're just going to sit on your couch and listen to music and then put the headphones on your dresser drawer or something they would be fine. Other than that they really just look too breakable.

What's gimmicky about them 

I think I could get somewhat decent quality for 40 bucks.

The good:
The Koss PortaPro Headphones combine a functional design with excellent 3D sound and a low price tag.

The bad:
Hair gets caught in the collapsible band; some people will dislike the '80s aesthetic.

The bottom line:
Koss hit a home run with the PortaPros. Love or hate the design, there's no denying the sound quality here: they're the ideal companion for mobile audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts.

They're trying to hook buyers through their assumption that more complicated-looking headphones are somehow more ergonomic, which in a lot of cases is false. You can get them if you want, but I'm trying to warn you that reviews tend to be BS and in terms of sound quality you generally get what you pay for.
