The Hand That Fisted Everyone

just finished The Stars Who Created Kabuki by some jew professor at PSU.

It was interesting to read about some of the central figures in Kabuki. The book focuses on three major actors and their lives. These three actors are interesting because they were considered the best actors in their fields for most of their lives. Especially interesting in the case of Yoshizawa Ayame, who was an Onnagata actor (specialist in female roles). Ayame was doing these kinds of roles well into his fifties and people were still saying he was the most convincing Onnagata actor. I'd hate be the onnagata actor that is less convincing than a 50 year old man.

There is also Danjuro and Tojuro. Danjuro was famous for playing deities and having a kind of outrageous style of acting, and the very dynamic style of acting Danjuro spearheaded is know as aragoto. Danjuro was so influential in kabuki that there are still Danjuro actors, with Danjuro XII passing away last year (the book is older and I didn't realize this until I read the Wikipedia article.) Danjuro was very devoted to god and kabuki, claiming that it was the gods that were responsible for his success in kabuki. Danjuro was also a kind of sensuous man and would often sleep around with some of his students behind his wife's back. After a year of bullshit happening at the Kabuki (mainly him slipping in popularity) Danjuro climbed to the top of his theatre and shouted at the gods, telling them that he wasn't going to fuck anymore dudes and stick it in his wife from now on. He credited that rooftop shouting session as the reason he could perform well into his old age. Many years passed and Danjuro was teaching some students. One student enjoyed fuckin' dudes alot too and Danjuro said to him "Boy Howdy if you don't stop that dude doin' you'll never be a great kabuki actor." The student really like fuckin' dudes tho, and was so pissed off that Danjuro told him to stop the pure boy love that he stabbed Danjuro.

Tojuro is almost an opposite of Danjuro. Tojuro favored realism and subtlety. Tojuro I guess would be closest to method acting, as he would go to great lengths to prepare for his roles. For one role, Tojuro had to play a prince or something that had to runaway on his wedding day. So he visited a small inn at a nearby town and hit it off with the woman who owned the joint. For a while they were bonding and enjoying each others company until one night when the inn keeper was ready for Tojuro to enter her quarters (aka FUCK HER) Tojuro didn't show up. Tojuro fell in love with a woman and broke her heart just to prepare for a role. Ain't that some shit. Tojuro didn't have the same successful lineage of Danjuro, but Tojuro is still considered one of the most important actors in kabuki simply because of his dedication to recreating the world on stage.

but this is a really niche book and i don't know that I would rec' it.
