First Gradius pretty much sucks, Gradius III is good but has horrible slow-down time.

yes every single gradius game is now one game

But seriously, compared to most games, the Gradius series is at least mildly difficult. Most scrolling shooters are, because they don't have much to offer in regards to other things that genres like RPGs are able to implement, such as storyline.

Plus they're arcade games so they were pretty much originally designed to steal money.
