Trainspotting is really good, but it's almost....overwhelming. You want to fucking shake those people.
Some really funny scenes, but there are equally as many disturbing ones.
The god damned baby..............
I also recommend the science of sleep if you're into that quirky gondry thing. Actually, the whole dreamscape thing works really well because it's confusing and disorienting as fuck but it's believable.
I ended up both hating and feeling bad for the main character, but I think that's the whole point of it.
Hurry.

I guess I'll save trainspotting for later then, I'm not really in the mood for a really stressful movie.
Trainspotting is brilliant, it's definitely one of my favorites of all time. Probably the best of those you listed.

It's not stressful at all, I'd say it's more lighthearted than dark overall... it's just one of those movies that actually makes you think about the characters and the situations they get themselves into. Especially if you haven't done many hard drugs, the first time you see it will be more intriguing than anything. Fuck, though, it's such a great movie, just watch it. You won't want to stop once you start, I promise.

Personally I would give Trainspotting a full 7/7 and watch it again any time (I've seen it probably 15 times), Science of Sleep is kind of cool but mostly just 'that quirky Gondry thing'. It's probably 4.5/7 and I don't know if I'd watch it again, it might be boring. Kind of a one-track plot that just has a few trippy elements along the way. Trainspotting is a barrage of ideas and really inspired dialog and separate plots from inside a tangible subculture of junkies... with a fucking great cast and soundtrack, too. It's just a brilliant film overall.

Because the quality of the streaming is inferior to that of the DVD and Netflix streaming is overpriced for something that has low overhead. bassir;

uh the quality is fine, rentals would not cost $10 a month either. besides, this is my grandma's netflix account, so it's free for me. and i don't even know of any video rental stores, and my only dvd player is built into my little 9-inch tv

7 is just an objectively better rating scale, 10 is too many and 5 is too few... out of 7 is always right on the nose, I mean what's the difference between 5/10 and 5.5/10, does it really seem different? but 5/7 or 4.5/7, you see the difference, you have to think about it and pick one or the other.
trainspotting fucking rules, seriously the best film the brits put out during the 90s. even better than the crying game.
though to be honest i can't think of many other really great british 90s films anyway. shakespeare in love maybe. lock, stock and two smoking barrels, maybe.

it's really not that unreasonable to say that it's possible to make a good 1-10 scale, and there's no reason to assume that everything 4 and below has to be "awful" by default
i think you've been observing the video game journalism grading scale too much n_u

my friend shot up heroin last week and was talking about the experience and said that getting a bad grade was more than shooting up heroin. Which isjust funny.

it's not just video games that use the 10 rating scale that way though, it seems to be more or less the same with music and movie reviews. Maybe not quite as bad, but anything 5 and below always seems to boil down to "avoid"
Or course you can get a 10 scale working fine, but I still think a 7 scale has all the basic levels of satisfaction. I don't really like 100 or 10.0 scales, because honestly is a 7.5 rating any different from a 7.6?
Alright, so Trainspotting aaaand Howl's Moving Castle.

well yeah but fuck professional reviews, man

uh yeah we're talking about rating things yourself here
7 is just an ugly prime number and that's just simply bad for scoring things (5 is okay since it's just half of 10)

no, 7 is a beautiful number, and half of 14 which is an even more beautiful number, by using .5 increments on the 7 scale you get 14 rating options instead of 20 which is far too many. don't need out of 5, don't need out of 10 or all these rating scales (especially fuck out of 4), just 7. that's it. it works for everything. just enough room to make a perfectly communicable rating without any ambiguity.
here's my problem with 10, there's too many increments that lose their meaning. what's 8.5/10 compared to 9/10? what's 2.5/10 compared to 3/10? the difference is clear but seems negligible. a 4.5/7 or a 5/7 has a clear difference of intention.
so I hope you also will adopt the 7-point rating scale for the rest of your life :)

Idk, some people liked it, but I despised every main character and the movie dragged on for an hour longer than it should have. Plus it's way too pretentious for its own good
