Title: Unsettling things in video games
Post by: Nyerp on December 01, 2010, 08:12:04 PM
Post things in games that weren't exactly pop-out-at-you scary but still managed to disturb the fuck out of you.

Like this:

This was just adding insult to injury. Not only did you die to the final boss but you have to see this long sequence where the entire fucking world is destroyed as a result of your failure.

Also, that scream. Fuck you, Lavos. :'( I was in a dark room in the middle of the night at the time.

I'll never beat Chrono Trigger. myface;

Well, it wasn't scary, but the first unsettling thing (at least the first couple of times I had to do it) that comes to mind is that airport level in MW2.

ikana canyon, the whole area

the dead look of everything, the graveyard, the music box house, the gibdos everywhere

ughh

though that was my favorite area in the game because of its atmosphere alone
Title: Re: Unsettling things in video games
Post by: rdl on December 04, 2010, 06:21:38 PM
ikana canyon is the definition of unsettling, especially without the garo mask because those dialog boxes always pop up about something wanting your blood or whatever.

god i hope i get to replay majora this winter break

same here, the whole place kicks ass

and the song that the music house plays is more creepy than cheerful

OH
ALSO: LSD for PS1

every part of these games is pretty eerie

Walking into empty rooms in a lot of games can be extremely unsettling. You are always hyped when playing games like say, Half-Life, and this room, so much effort to get to, all this way...

And it's completely empty. Nothing there to even interact with besides the door you came in.

i know a lot of people mention this, but i really do not like that crazy dentist in bioshock, mostly because he just stands there. he'll never even attack you, even if you turn around and look right back at him.

also, nothing unsettles me more than those weird, spastic game crashes in old games where it makes a bunch of garbled noises and the screen goes nuts

i had the original donkey kong country suddenly quit on me and then go to an anti-emulation screen

only game i ever experienced it in, and it hasn't happened since

One time I was playing Kirby Superstar; I was at the Dynablade level/episode/whatever

I got teleported to Marx for no goddamn reason and the graphics and sound were fucked up and I didn't sleep that night :'(

The first boss in BS1?

Yeah he was weird.

no, he's just a normal doctor-type splicer in the dentist's office...when you go in, a bunch of steam pours in and he disappears, and then when you pick up a tonic on a desk, the steam comes back in, and when you turn around he's standing right behind you

That noise in the last nine seconds of the video gave me a migraine and hopefully not a seizure. o_o
I find the sight of blood in video games unsettling. :x

In God of War III the secret arm room in Hades' Lair  :( It gave me the creeps when all of those arms sprouted out of the walls around Kratos.

what's unsettling about regenerators is the last one in the game, in the prison cells, if you know the trick that allows you to walk right up to him, without him attacking

In Bioshock I could NEVER harvest a little sister. Still haven't, not even once.

Also not sure if this counts but in the old Pokemon Red/Blue days I used to get goosebumps every single time I did the misingno cheat. Dunno why, but it just creeped me the fuck out seeing that old man on the roof.
