Isn't the world supposed to end in 2012? baddood;
Yeah, I saw this on Digg earlier... the sad part is that no one's making this up, and in one way or another it's going to happen within a decade. The internet is just too uncontrolled and free a place to go without being gobbled up by giant media corporations, same as music has been.
That'll be the end of Boyah. :'(

There's a text version. It's basically just an outline of net neutrality.
I'd probably stop going to boyah by then. Five years of my life to Boyah? Rolf.

No financial issues will be encountered since there are several venues of income in the salmonthievery.com world and it's unlikely that all of them would fail.
Also, for the confused, here's a summary:
The internet right now is run by hundreds/thousands of Internet Service Providers, which are companies that own a shitload of servers and provide internet to people. These are companies such as Comcast, Mediacom, etc. There are other companies and rich people who don't like that they can't profit enough from the internet since anyone can make a website or do whatever they want, so they want to consolidate all the ISP's into a couple mega-corporations and charge people for internet "packages" like you would pay for TV channels with DirecTV or something. It's very similar to music with the 4 major record labels that control everything you listen to on Top 20 radio stations.
I can't see this happening. So many businesses would die, and what really worries me is that my dad operates 2 internet businesses ( http://soilsonline.com and http://submetersystems.com ) where he sells products through sellers in real life to customers and we make a pretty good living off of that, but if this is really all true, even though I'll be in college by then, it would be much harder for my whole family in general.

Do you think in the 60's anyone though that the hits on the radio would be conceived, written, and directed by a team of completely unmusical individuals, and then more or less forced onto the music channels of everyday consumers? Definitely not. But that's what we have now.
Do you think, before it happened, that anyone thought that a few individuals would someday own almost all of the major media and entertainment companies in the country? Nope. But that's what's happening now.
It has happened and is happening to everything, and it's only a matter of time before it happens to the internet.

I was actually thinking about how to do that earlier
An interesting thing to think about is all the other news that's been coming out about alternate world networks on the rise... the one CERN is building for research purposes, for instances, includes 250,000 fiber-optic linked servers around the world, or something. This thing I was reading was saying that after CERN is done with it, it could likely be the beginning of a brand new "internet" that would allow for things like full-length movie downloads in a couple seconds because all the servers are linked by fiber optics instead of the shitty phone lines that most things use now.
So, if corporation-internet-takeover doesn't get ruled out by Federal law, the question is which will come first: a completely new internet or ISP consolidation.

Yeah, I noticed that too, and I don't really understand if that video is supposed to be a joke, but if it is I don't get it because the net neutrality issue is a real one that's been going on in Congress and elsewhere for a few years now.

The video isn't the point. I know it's bogus, but read the page I linked JMV to a few pages back, it outlines the net neutrality issue without any jokes.
Also I'm not having a shit fit about corporate entities not letting me listen to my favorite song; the purpose of the example was to illustrate how various industries have been completely overtaken by a few individuals/trade groups/companies in the past. Music, movies, news, pretty much every category of consumer goods. You can't argue about that.
And yes, it is happening. There are parties who would be very interested in lumping all the ISP's together and profiting from charging people for internet "subscription packages." There's nothing unbelievable about that, and there's also nothing unbelievable about the idea that owners of existing ISP's would sell out for vast sums of money or give up a small amount of ownership under some lucrative contract.
I repeat, you're an idiot. baddood;
