I just watched the whole thing

In PC environments I'm familiar in reasonably technical ways with, portability is of greatest concern (especially hardware, including even GPU manufacturer), OSes give you an unpredictable slice of CPU clock, you can't rely on any particular number in system specs, and any focus on performance would be split between making the software run better on worse systems or adding more stuff for the system to spend its power on.

I've seen some of the sort of low level hackery that goes into old systems, but I feel like this talk shows some interesting insight on single-platform-focused development on more recent (eg 3D-capable) systems with priorities like "time to triangle" while offhandedly mentioning a much stronger focus on "puzzle-solving" assembly optimizations than I expected game developers to still have.

but I doubt many other game developer studios actually think much like Cerny does about this stuff
