If you haven't played in a while, you might need the fancy new launcher. To run the snapshot versions of the game, you need to click "Edit Profile" at the launcher (or create a new one if you prefer) and check "Enable experimental development versions ("snapshots")". Right now the server is running 13w39b; I might keep it synchronized with the weekly updates but maybe not.
If you've had trouble running the game well in the past, it may be worth it to try out 1.7. It seems to run a lot more smoothly and there are a lot of new graphical options.
