To me, it seems easier to read posts in a smaller box than one that fills my screen. I think I've even seen some article mention that it's proven that, beyond a certain width of the element in which text wraps (relative to font size), readability decreases.

we probably could use a slightly larger text size anyways, but beyond that I don't feel like we're wasting horizontal space because on most pages (like post view) we have a lot of fixed-height elements and don't have much wrapped text so the difference in vertical size because of limited horizontal size is very little; the space would still be wasted, except in colored boxes instead of the background.

on the page this post is visible on, for example, the only thing that would be less tall because of increased width would be Chrome user agents like
