Really, though, what were they thinking? Who are they really trying to help?

I'm always a little uncomfortable when I hear (or see) stories like this. From one perspective, I'm sure (Maybe, who the fuck knows) that the cerebral palsy kid was flying high for the next week or so and the parents get to feel good about it and the school gets to have a little feel good session and maybe the local newspaper would pick up the story. They're probably working with the best of intentions, but that doesn't change much.

But then what happens after that? Working through and overcoming a disability is pretty rad within the limitations of the disability. Like a guy learning to play guitar with his feet after savages cut his arms off. This type of encouragement could probably be pretty detrimental in the long run. Teach the kid to be a badass hammer dulcimer player instead.

Wrestling's lame anyways.

seriously

The whole "YOU CAN BE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO BE" thing is going a little too far with this. Sure, if some kid wants to be an astronaut someday then it is possible, but we shouldn't just give the job to the most pitiful people because it's an "inspiring story." Help people who are not only determined, but capable. If this kid really wants to wrestle, you can't just throw him in a ring and declare him the world champion when his effort ends at saying he wants to win--he needs a robotic body or something so he can actually compete.

or you can throw a bunch of kids with cerebral palsy into a no-holds-barred cage match and see who the legitimate winner is

you people are awful. the kindes and that boy made me cry. if everyone had that much compassion we could solve all the world's problems tomororw.

i for one have had my faith in humanity restored.

strongbad

i can't get behind stuff like this. i mean, depending on the individual with cp's mental state, he could have been really fucking stoked about winning, but i've worked with some people with cp and a lot of the time they are pretty mentally coherent about what is going on. this comes off as overly sympathetic for me. if i was the kid and i knew that i won because i didn't do anything because people felt sorry for my condition, it would make me feel worse.
but then again it probably did help his self esteem a lot knowing that so many people were happy for him

idk it just makes me a little uneasy

Hippopo

Perhaps its not our place to put a moral value on this event.
