It is essentially migrant farming. You go oversees, work on a host families farm, you get food and board (no monetary compensation).

Most people seem to do it a week.

Also, there is a annual fee. It's small. Also, you have to pay for your airfare.

My loose plan is to save up a few grand, head to japan, wwoof/camp/stay in hostels for awhile. A month, maybe two. This will be after I get my AA. I would get around via train/folding bicycle. Shit would be pretty cool. I think Japan is a beautiful country and would love to visit it's rural communities.

course they aren't all farms,  I think a few are hotels that need workers. Also fishing communities, woodworkers, I think I saw some host families that focused on like art or something.

It's all dependent on the host. You can stay for extended amounts of time. The girl I met at the drum circle is spending her summer in Europe farming. I think that they have some wwoof host families in Africa.

I really don't need to travel this route, as I already have a native land and several family owned farms, orchards and vineyards over there. Every few years or so we visit them and spend a month seeing the country and exploring the estates. But, fundamentally, there is another pressing reason why this would be impractical in my case--you can't compromise life changing experiences, and some half assed trip without the right attitude and preparation is half meaningless to start with. To just up and leave my life now for a poorly thought out adventure is very strange and unwarranted.
