Also, I don't think I have talked to Boyah about WWOOFing

It is essentially migrant farming. You go oversees, work on a host families farm, you get food and board (no monetary compensation).

Most people seem to do it a week.

I'm liking this idea more and more. Working on a farm in Japan seems pretty cool. here is the link to Japan's wwoofing thing
http://www.wwoofjapan.com/main/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1&lang=en

Also, there is a annual fee. It's small. Also, you have to pay for your airfare.

My loose plan is to save up a few grand, head to japan, wwoof/camp/stay in hostels for awhile. A month, maybe two. This will be after I get my AA. I would get around via train/folding bicycle. Shit would be pretty cool. I think Japan is a beautiful country and would love to visit it's rural communities.

You can also do it in European countries *coughboyagerswhospeakfrenchcanactuallygotofranceatthelowlowpriceofafewdaysofmauallaborcough*

Would boyah do this? What places would you go?

So you pay a fee and for airfare just to go work on a farm?
There's some other website where people offer you rooms in their houses for free like a host family, I forget the name though. Why not just do something like that?

but you don't learn to farm that way.

course they aren't all farms,  I think a few are hotels that need workers. Also fishing communities, woodworkers, I think I saw some host families that focused on like art or something.

Oh, well if I guess you're interested in that then this sounds like a good idea
sorry, my apologies

what no i am not offended.

i was just sharing a nice little way to visit a foreign country. It's like summer camp, you have fun and you work

or you get exploited for manual labor.

for a week? you'd barely be settling in and getting to know people after a week. something like that sounds cool to me (if I can go to africa), but I would want to stay at least one month.

It's all dependent on the host. You can stay for extended amounts of time. The girl I met at the drum circle is spending her summer in Europe farming. I think that they have some wwoof host families in Africa.

the official wwoof website is http://wwoof.org or something.

Andria

If I could afford to buy a plane ticket I would probably do this now.

C.Mongler

Can I go to Russia and is there a guarantee I won't be killed/kidnapped?

YPrrrr

Hiro

I would want to do this in japan as well, it sounds great.

I really don't need to travel this route, as I already have a native land and several family owned farms, orchards and vineyards over there. Every few years or so we visit them and spend a month seeing the country and exploring the estates. But, fundamentally, there is another pressing reason why this would be impractical in my case--you can't compromise life changing experiences, and some half assed trip without the right attitude and preparation is half meaningless to start with. To just up and leave my life now for a poorly thought out adventure is very strange and unwarranted.
