i've done it completely like 2 or 3 times and its never itched. it just got really...uncomfortable feeling

I got both.  I now trim if I don't like the length.

I've trimmed mine only once, and I'm pretty sure it was uneven because I kept freaking out over the thought of cutting something important off.

And do not shave against the grain the first time, or the first couple times, holy shit. 

haha, yeah that can get dicey. I shave edges and trim canopies, I prefer an aesthetically pleasing and compromising wood.
