Ubuntu

Ever since I got my netbook, I've pondered running Ubuntu. I've done some research, and it looks like for my needs, it will be considerablely better than XP. I am just a little worried about permanent installation, since it sounds like a huge pain in the ass to install XP if I dislike Ubuntu.

So yeah do you guys think that Ubuntu is worth it? Or should I stick with XP?

You will love Ubuntu and it'll work quicker and more fluidly than xp. The only reason I'm not telling you this very goddamn second to put in a livecd is that I've had some troubles with wireless internet with linux computers. It's mostly a problem for old computers, though. If you get ubuntu, you can use it without ever touching the terminal, but you will have to ask people for help sometimes. It helps to have a newer computer.

Also I was browsing the official ubuntu site and I noticed a netbook edition. Do you know anything about this? Obviously, i feel like I should use this since i have  netbook, but I haven't heard anything about it so idk really

Yeah, they're flexible like that. You should get it, and it should all work out. And if you have any problems in that respect, I know 100% how to fix it. But if they're releasing a special edition, than you should be all the fuck set! Just backup your files, burn the iso, and go to town. You can preview it if you want from the livecd.

Pqqu: because not everyone deserves to wrestle with ndiswrapper for 18 months.

My first Linux os was ubuntu, I think it was great for a complete newbie. Oh and you should try googling to see if your netbook will work with ubuntu. It most likely will, but sometimes there are workarounds required (drivers). So yeah so it and if you don't like it go back to xp. What do you have to lose?

I run ubuntu, and have been for a good amount of time already.
The only problem i had is that from startup my wireless wasn't working, but all i really had to do was enable the 'bcm-43' drivers or something. The first time i installed it on my laptop i went way to far and used ndiswrapper which was dumb because all i had to do was enable those drivers.
The first time i installed ubuntu i installed it via WUBI, which is a program that lets ubuntu be installed a as a program on windows, and if you want to delete ubuntu you could just remove it from the add/remove programs section in windows.
I wouldn't recommend that though. What i WOULD recommend you do is what i am doing currently, dual boot windows, and ubuntu in case you need windows. I rarely need windows so i made the partition for it really small. I did the same with ubuntu and left an empty partition in between and formatted it as FAT32, so it could be read by both file systems and that is where i store all of my files. If i wanted to delete windows all i would have to do is delete the windows partition and merge the shared portion and my ubuntu partition so it would be simple to delete if you wanted to.
It runs smoother and boots around 4 times faster than windows. Also when ubuntu updates you don't have to shutdown the computer and it runs smoothly. One thing i would do is try it live first, when you create your bootable USB drive and boot off of it, it will give you the option to run ubuntu live. Do this so you could see how everything works out. And if say your wireless doesn't work. Just try google searching your model and the problem and i am sure someone has a fix up.
So its relatively easy. Another thing is, mp3's, wma's, and most other file formats aren't enabled at first, so you would have to enable them by going to the software center and enabling 'ubuntu-restricted-extras'.
If all goes well you will be up and running fine in a short amount of time. Its much quicker than the windows installation.
Oh and i have ran ubuntu netbook before, i just don't prefer it because i have a 17" laptop. And netbook remix is more of for...well netbooks, so instead of just having a background and a menu, it has this sort of menu integrated on the desktop in the form of a table?

I have installed regular ubuntu on my friends hp mini and it works fine. It all comes do to what you prefer there. If there is a problem with normal ubuntu its just because of how small the screen is and having to fit everything basically...
Other than that its fine.
If you do end up getting ubuntu i think you would like it. I know i really do. The not having viruses is a big plus.
If you do get it you will get better at time. I'm still learning, don't know everything. But can get around. And have learned some terminal commands. But you can get around without terminal use.

Ndiswrapper nearly killed me, as it was my first outing into the realm of linux. I booted Suse at first, and since there was better documentation for Ubuntu I went with that...and then it took me 18 months before I got my wireless working (almost by chance).

yes I'd take a linux distro over Windows any day. I like red hat ones more than debian but if it's your first, just go with ubuntu

Use Unetbootin if you want to install from USB.

Also wireless problems with it aren't as prevalent as they used to be. They've fixed it greatly in the past few releases. Good luck.

Well at first I had to figure out wtf is terminal is my computer sick or something. Haha, I really did need to construct my knowledge from scratch. But here I am.

My computer's about 8 years old now, and it's a laptop, and it's a dell (Inspiron 1100). Got it for free. I'm surprised it's still living...it's been fucking up recently, so I've been thinking of putting it on a lighter distro. Any suggestions.

Also, I have a project I'm working on, on another laptop. I want to have it essentially to only select and play internet radio playlists that I have on a folder in a flash drive. Literally, I want it to boot up, and have a menu with these playlists and perhaps some relevant data. Has this ever been done? If I wanted to do it myself, what would I have to do?


Jack: I've played with useragent strings, and it always links a browser type with an operating system; so it doesn't figure out what your OS is and what your Browser is, it just reads what the browser gives it. I doubt that SMF has updated their list of userstrings for the Chrome release for linux.

Example: if you use the firefox addon useragent switcher, and set your browser to Netscape or something (lol), you can't get it to display anything but windows 2000. Fun, huh?

And yeah i wanted to install an operating system that was ALL media player.
But i didn't really look into it, or how you would do that...
