Ok.

About 45 minutes ago, I let my nephew hold my iPhone. He's blasting the music through the speaker, something I never do. Now, he has it for about 20 minutes doing this. I finally take it from him, and it's hot as fuck. I think, damn, and just shrug it off that it's hot because of the constant music playing. Then I ride to Target with Brittany. When I get to Target and I get a call, I answer it, but can't hear anything. Now I'm thinking, "eh, must be a bad connection." After a few more times of calling the person back and not hearing them, I get pissed.

First thing that pops in my head; "fuck, now I have to shell out $400 for another phone." After calling everyone I know trying to see if I can hear someone, I just turned it off for 15 mintues. Turns out it must have over-heated, because it's fine now. I think should go buy the Apple insurance now though...

tl;dr I thought my iPhone broke and now I want a new one  edumacate;

3G is much faster than EDGE -- stuff like Google Maps and Safari will be a lot faster. There's also rumored to be some other changes like real GPS (instead of the sketchy cell tower triangulation thing it has now), different case (there's been some probably fake photos of iPhones with white backs), and the new AppStore thing.

Also, no, jailbreaking it wasn't what caused the overheating.

So current iPhone owners will basically have to buy this new 3g iPhone? No way to upgrade?

The difference is hardware, so no, no way to upgrade. No one has to buy a new one, though... AT&T's EDGE network isn't being taken down or anything.

Send me your phone if you get the new one. baddood;

Too bad AT&T's 3G coverage is crap.

That's what I'm using with my new cellphone.  :(

Squirtlejazz

Maybe they won't be complete dicks and let you trade in your old one for credit or something and then hopefully only have to pay a small price. Who knows though.

Eh, I find all the squabbling people do about "well at&t has less dropped calls" etc to be ridiculous; I've been on T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T/Cingular over the last few years and haven't observed a single difference between any of them. Point being, the data coverage I've experienced so far has been great from all the providers (and I don't even mind EDGE).

Also AT&T massively upgraded their whole EDGE network as the iPhone first came out, so I don't doubt they'll do something similar for the 3G ones.
