A semicolon, in most cases, is used to string together two clauses that cannot be placed together as a normal sentence. The two individual clauses are often complete sentences on their own, but they don't have to be. It can also be used similarly to a comma to indicate a series of objects, but that just looks weird. I think to do that, there needs to be internal commas. Another use is to place a semicolon between clauses that are linked with a conjuctive device (be it adverb or normal conjunction).
