It was final fantasy 3 in japan, and final fantasy 6 in the states.  I downloaded the rom so..  :|

No, it's the other way around. The original release in Japan was FF6. However, it was the third in the series to be localized in the US, and it was placed on the SNES as FF3. It's always been 6 there, but only recently has it become known as 6 here in the states. The re-releases have all been named FF6 even though our original version was called 3.
