When you factor in the discounts Apple offers and the lifespan of Macs, yeah, they are fairly cheap. $1000 for a computer that can run the latest OS eight years from now is a damn good deal. powerofone;
They also have ridiculous resale value. An iBook G3 could still go for 300 bucks.

oh yeah i can't wait to get leopard on my g3 imac

Macs being Macs doesn't somehow make them immune to Moore's law.  psyduck;
Not to mention that upgrading can be more difficult, meaning one would have to buy an entirely new model.

One would not have to buy an entirely new model, because unlike PCs people upgrade, they don't come with shitty specs that you have to upgrade yourself.

True, but it is kinda fun building your own PC, I had fun building mine

I'd rather have my computer COME with 1 gig of RAM and a 200 gig Hard Drive than have my computer come with 512 RAM and an 80 gigabyte hard drive that I'd have to upgrade myself.

You can customize a PC when buying it, too. psyduck;

as bassir said

Also, up until the new lines were just announced, the lower-end iMacs (which Zach would have to get because he's poor) came with just 512MB of memory.  One could have easily found a far cheaper PC with a GB of memory.  psyduck;

And Windows Vista hogs up every little byte.

Mac OS X runs perfectly fine on just 128 megs of RAM, and can even be run on as little as 64. psyduck;

I disagree, OS X needs a lot of Ram. IMO it runs smoothly on at least 512 or 768

Any OS when slapped on more powerful hardware will perform better. I've used OS X Tiger on some of the first iMacs, and it's pretty damn smooth.

Well, I do a lot of media work, so the work I do I need a lot of power

But windows XP needs a lot of CPU power, it's hard on even a 1.6GHz AMD

cool

So, you'd be fine with your mac running on 128 MB? psyduck;
