authenticity aside, these screenshots and pieces of concept art are absolutely beautiful cry;

that first especially is mesmerizing

but as excited as i am about the prospect of a new dark souls, i can't help but feel it's a little soon for a 3, and i'm a little bit worried about what such a rapid release schedule might mean for the future of the series

dark souls 2 came out in march 2014, bloodborne (which hasn't even received its obligatory dlc expansion yet) in march 2015, and "early 2016" would put 3 in about march 2016 also

assuming that's not just coincidence, i'm not so sure this is a series which should be annualized, nor am i certain it's a series which could withstand it

of course, bloodborne isn't technically a dark souls game but it's still a from software title that's so heavily based on souls themes/mechanics/technology/etc. that it may as well be one

yeah... you know, after 3, I kinda hope they stop for a year or two.
UNLESS!!!! Quality holds up. then i don't care

i'm not even worried about a dip in quality so much as i am about gradually diminishing in innovation

as for my earlier worries about annualization, which were completely off the mark

a tinge of bitterness to the sweet, just the way i like my souls games :'(

nah, they gotta be lying, or at least continue with Bloodborne

Post by: Kalahari Inkantation on June 15, 2015, 12:49:43 PM
i guess they could continue with bloodborne but they'd be losing out on the xbox and pc markets

i'm guessing we'll see a multiplat ""'spiritual successor""" to bloodborne out of the same necessity that dark souls was born of in the first place

i'm going to sorely miss dark souls though, so many of my favorite 7th gen experiences and memories were based in lordran and drangleic (and boletaria) and it's easily one of the defining franchises of the past decade in gaming for me

can i legitimately be nostalgic over a game that first released in 2009/2011 rofl
BABA BOOEY!

I've almost finished dark souls.  Next up, Demon souls then Dark souls 2, then Dark souls 3. Skipping bloodborne because no PS4. And hopefully I'll have a new PC by the time I'm finishing up Demons souls, and then I can play dark souls again with the DLC (because fuck paying $15 for old content when I can probly buy the prepare to die edition on the PC for cheaper)

You can take a picture with the Red Knight and share it with #EmbraceTheDarkness to get yourself a SDCC exclusive 2 sided poster.

You can also see the Dark Souls fountain in person at Petco Park. If you take a photo at the fountain and share it with #EmbraceTheDarkness and #DarkSoulsSDCC, you’ll get a physical print out of your image and a Dark Souls selfie stick as a souvenir.

what i've gleaned from all this conflicting information and indecision: this may perhaps be the final dark souls game (unless it sells well enough), but expect to see a so-called spiritual successor titled 'dead souls' or 'bloodmourne' or smth in 2017
new firelink shrine is literally just the nexus lmao

"touch the darkness inside me" wow this game is already brimming with callbacks (along with that shitty giant tree from das2 (looks like they even ripped the model straight from that game ugh))

first boss was cool but had like no hp which is weird since they give you a bonfire right in front of him

game is great so far, but looks like estus shards and the das2 durability system are back. can't wait to have to wade through corrosive acid at some point, as if the devs are treating your armor as a potential status effect awdood;
is it ever? in every souls game, your post-game stats allow you to pretty well outweigh any increased difficulty, not to mention the fact that you're replaying stuff you know already.

ng+ is a cakewalk in every souls game

if you don't want to be cured you might as well try to go for the ending that requires you to be hollowed through acquiring dark signs

all i know is that it involves acquiring darksigns and some other character that shows up after being hollowed

and i know about it because of reading about the dude who does it for you, because i wasn't about to choose that dialogue option without knowing what it was first

some parts are I guess. It felt like the bosses didn't get much harder in this game though? Like I did 2 full playthroughs and then 1 where I skipped anything optional. I was a little disappointed at how easy it was. :(

I've been noticing an "easy" pattern as well....

Idk, maybe it's because I've played all the previous games so far, or this one just IS easier, but I haven't died more than twice at a boss yet. Maybe the difficulty spike is coming soon? In the current area I'm in?

It's the normal enemies that seem harder, and even then, not by that much

yeah this seems easier than DSII by far, I beat the Crystal boss today and it wasnt that hard. The only boss that I took me a while was that dumb tree because I didnt know wtf I was supposed to do  akudood;

and yeah, the mobs are harder than the bosses so far, especially those fucking dogs
the amount of ds1 fanservice in smouldering lake is kind of ridiculous goonish
also the bonfire placement in this game is downright terrible. i feel like only one level so far has been cleverly designed around having a central bonfire (and is my favorite area yet). the rest of the game just sprinkles bonfires everywhere without thinking about how far apart they are. (for instance: [glow=black,2,300]abandoned tomb + demon ruins + old demon king bonfires in the catacombs. wtf were they thinking)[/glow]

yeah...so i've now come to accept that this game is just a big sendoff for the series. after making it to a certain area, i can't see this game as anything but that. the original content and concepts in this game are great, but the focus is clearly on pleasing people who want to see callbacks to the previous games, and that's fine i guess...

i actually really hate how many mimics there are in this game. like it just makes you stock up on undead hunter charms because fighting them isn't any fun. i think they slightly outnumber normal chests, what the fuck?? one of the first chests you can find in the game is a fucking mimic. this is the one aspect of the game that panders to the "wow its so hard but this is dark souls XDDD" crowd and it's awful
Title: Re: Dark Souls III
Post by: Samus Aran on April 24, 2016, 11:06:55 PM
tho granted, if you're playing online, there is a 90% chance you will see a player sign warning you that it's a mimic

for that reason i was never fooled by a single one
Title: Re: Dark Souls III
Post by: TooB on April 24, 2016, 11:22:46 PM
also, looking at it's chain.

if it's curled and mostly pointing at the chest, its normal.

if the chain is more straight, and pointing more towards you, it's a mimic
Title: Re: Dark Souls III
Post by: Nyerp on April 25, 2016, 12:46:11 AM
uhhh i don't hate them because i keep getting fooled by them (happened maybe once), i hate them because having so many of them all throughout the game greatly devalues the "surprise" and uniqueness of finding a mimic. mimics are meant to catch you off guard and make you become cautious about rushing to open chests, but when that happens the first time you see a chest, it just makes you assume every single chest you see is a mimic (which is almost true in this game). it instantly reduces the feeling of "ooh, i hope that isn't a mimic" to "that's probably a mimic. i was right. time to kill this mimic."

helping people beat bosses is so much fun why did i neglect this aspect of these games for so long. i love how you immediately get summoned for untitled man too

when you put down your summon sign in ng+ you get summoned by people in ng+ right??? or is it really hard to get summoned in early levels when you're level ~100 regardless?

there is no ng vs ng+ etc. limit to summoning. it's done by soul level and weapon level. basically, you can play online with people who are near the same soul level as you, and are using weapons around the same reinforcing level

granted, the specifics differ depending upon what types of phantoms we're talking about, but i can at least say for sure that which game cycle someone is on doesn't matter

Of course, its still pretty hard to do a lot of multiplayer stuff at high levels because most of your targets are far below your level. So stuff like Farron Watchdogs, Aldrich Faithful, and Darkmoon are nigh impossible to do past certain levels. So people like me that foolishly ignore them end up having to grind their respective items off rare drops from enemies instead.

But at least Sunbro and Rosarias Fingers are easy to do at any level.

for platinuming purposes it's not possible to do both heysel and sirris questlines in one playthrough but i guess you could at least get both gestures yeah.

but you can't get the silvercat ring from sirris unless you stay completely away from rosaria's fingers in a playthrough, and getting all rings is one of the trophies

but you shouldn't worry about all this unless you truly plan on platinuming, because if you do plan on it, you need to prepare yourself for some seriously long grinding sessions to get wolf's blood swordgrass and, even worse, proofs of concord kept
yeah i was even standing right next to her corpse so i took extra damage when it happened lol

the boss fight itself is pretty fucking cool from an aesthetic standpoint, but having to do those first two phases every time you die to the ridiculous third phase (if you're bad like me) really wears down on you

overall the dlc was good but it needed maybe one more boss to feel "complete". that stretch of level between the end of the corvian village and the cathedral's bug basement was also kind of boring as well. in fact, i think the lack of a boss fight in the village is what makes that part just feel like filler. if you manage to completely miss the ice chasm area, there's not a single boss until friede. which is kind of ridiculous.

in terms of souls dlc i'd say this one is above iron king and sunken king but lower than ivory king (ignoring the horse valley) and WAY lower than ds1 and bb's dlcs

and now we have to wait like 6+ months for the next dlc :'(
That depends on who you ask of course. I felt it was good. I'm glad I played it and everything, but it is short compared to the other Souls DLC.

so a couple days ago i finished the dlc. pretty cool. the main boss fight was actually really cool, if a bit frustrating for how long it is. second boss fight was pretty lame unfortunately.

the area of the dlc itself isn't bad but it's definitely not any better than some of the weaker areas of the main game tbh

decent dlc/10

anyway, so far i've killed iudex gundyr, vordt, greatwood (fuck; greatwood), crystal sage, stray demon, and most recently i've cleared the cathedral of the deep and killed the deacons (obligatory boring souls mob boss #839)

just before the cathedral, i'd done everything in the farron keep area except for actually challenge the boss, so that's my next task

but we'll see how difficulty ramps up as i progress

1's opening hours are very forgiving (discounting the capra demon) if only because the game simply does not penalize you for death, unlike any other souls game

2 does, and on top of that, the pursuer is probably the hardest early-game boss in any souls game, plus its early-game environments are generally more hazardous than 1's and especially 3's

what's surprising about 3 is that despite its death penalty, its opening hours are even more forgiving than 1's

Title: Re: Dark Souls III
Post by: Kalahari Inkantation on November 22, 2016, 07:00:19 PM
and dark souls 2 isn't nearly as punitive as demon's souls where you lose 50% of your max health right off the bat

rather your max health diminishes by a tiny increment with each successive death, ultimately down to 50%

imo the difficulty disparity between 1 and 2 is negligible outside of boss arenas

3's is honestly a pretty negligible penalty. it's basically a light version of the demon's souls penalty. the hp difference between kindled vs unkindled is much less harsh.

however, it's also balanced better than dark souls 1 humanity. stacking humanity in 1 just makes you stronger and stronger, and it's way too easy to do so with how often you pick up humanities. and when you recover your souls, you recover all those soft humanities as well. plus they heal you if you use them.

on the other hand, you can only be kindled or unkindled in 3. if you're already kindled, you can't use an ember, it does nothing. it can't even heal you. so while you could theoretically use it while at low health and unkindled to both heal yourself and raise your max hp, it's a one-time thing.

so kindling is a less versatile system than humanity, but it's better balanced.

i didn't really like 2's system tbh. i think they found a happy medium with 3.

i mean frankly they do so little damage and are so slow to attack you can just roll around or swing wildly and you should barely even be taking damage lol. and the active deacon always goes down with just a couple hits so idk how anyone even manages to allow the curse spell to happen

I love how dark souls players always talk about how a boss is, like it'll be that simple for anyone who plays, no matter how relatively easy a boss may be.

Like, its dark souls, shit can happen. It's easy to mess up too.

it's really phase 2 that i had more trouble with lol

it's just really easy to get distracted between clearing a path to the bodyguard-swarmed main deacon, and interrupting the curse fog spammers, and avoiding that giant blast of dark magic, etc., and it's such a protracted battle of attrition that i would frequently end up running out of estus before the main one was near dead

they're definitely harder than pinwheel >.<

i mean frankly they do so little damage and are so slow to attack you can just roll around or swing wildly and you should barely even be taking damage lol. and the active deacon always goes down with just a couple hits so idk how anyone even manages to allow the curse spell to happen

that fight is like pinwheel easy, just not as pinwheel fast

it's really phase 2 that i had more trouble with lol

it's just really easy to get distracted between clearing a path to the bodyguard-swarmed main deacon, and interrupting the curse fog spammers, and avoiding that giant blast of dark magic, etc., and it's such a protracted battle of attrition that i would frequently end up running out of estus before the main one was near dead

they're definitely harder than pinwheel >.<

deep battleaxe

if you happened to get it as a drop from the darkwraiths in farron keep, i recommend the dark sword as a very good PVE weapon. as a balanced STR/DEX build, refined dark sword is very powerful and very easy to use PVE. its weapon ability sucks but i never use those lol

yes, his intro cutscene is awesome

and i was legitimately afraid for a second upon running into a giant skeletal hand in otherwise perfect darkness lol

i basically feel the same way lol

it's cheap, blatant fanservice, but exiting irithyll into that all too familiar elevator and recognizing where i was did put a smile on my face, i'll admit

on the other hand, considering it's just a tiny, largely unmodified sliver of an area i learned like the back of my hand in ds1, it's the weakest part of irithyll (minus the dungeons)

but i guess irithyll itself serves as the expansion to anor londo

its inclusion did reinforce the fact that i don't understand dark souls geography at all
In a game whose story is not conveyed very well at all, this is something I out together. Whether you agree or not, is fine either way. It's just my thoughts on the world.

fromsoft just did a phenomenal job establishing an immersive atmosphere for that fight, between the sound direction (boss heels clicking in tempo with music), the visual effects (cathedral interior engulfed in flames upon being struck by boss weapons, the ethereal veil physics), the great intro, the uncanny serpentine gracefulness of the boss, it just all comes together to create a really fantastic end product

the dancer fight isn't my absolute favorite because the strategy itself is pretty basic (artorias remains the best souls boss ever), but as an overall package i think the dancer battle is the most memorable in any souls game thus far

a+

yeah, the sudden onslaught of asteroids from the flying corpses had me worried my no-death streak would be broken

thankfully they don't seem to aim intelligently at all lol

obligatory souls gimmick boss down, three attempts

i feel like there's hardly even an argument to be made in favor of ds1's bosses

i mean, a handful of them like ornstein/smough and artorias are on par with 3's, but the vast majority of them don't even compare

of course, that's not to say they're bad at all

3's are just better on average lol
*complaining about the ending in the LAST piece of content in a dark souls game EVER. there's not even a cutscene. the whole of the two dlcs is just a side story about some npc who's never even mentioned in the base game. you get to go to a LOST CITY AT THE END OF THE WORLD TO GET THE DARK SOUL!!!! oh wait this underdeveloped npc beat you to it so you just kill him and give his "blood of the dark soul" to the painting girl who just thanks you and continues to sit there, doing nothing forever
you know, after attempting that boss a few (dozen) more times, i think i've misjudged him. he's not one of the worst bosses or anything.
he's THE worst boss. in this game, and possibly the whole franchise. here's why:

1. ridiculous pool of hp guarantees that the fight will last 10 or more minutes
2. only really takes damage through his head, meaning it's one of those fights where you're chasing one body part around (like cutting off a ds1 boss's tail, only you HAVE to do it now!!)
3. CONSTANTLY breaks the lock-on. whether you've gotten too close during his combo strings (which all propel him forward) or he's decided to fly up to reset his position/spray fire, your lock-on abilities are fucked and now you're scrambling with the right stick so you don't get instakilled by fire or get clipped by another of his swings. this is mostly caused by him inexplicably only having one lock-on position
4. speaking of fire, he's constantly spraying it everywhere, and even if the tiniest little flame of it touches you while he's barfing it on the ground, you'll always take a fixed amount of damage and get knocked over. because that makes sense.
5. like the similarly awful sinh from ds2, midir loves to play keepaway. found the perfect opportunity to attack his head? nope, now he's all the way across the map, firing lasers at you. another thing to extend the length of the fight. fun.
6. he has this charge attack that has almost no telegraphing animation. he just suddenly slides across the arena somehow. also that one really long combo he does literally just wastes your time since it's almost impossible to reach his head at the end of it
7. the laser orgasm attack at the start of phase 2 is just fucking stupid
8. i've never made it past number 7 but i bet there's even more bullshit after it. but i'll never know!!!!!

dragon bosses in these games can fuck off and die forever. yes i'm mad

gael and the demons were cool tho
