Not the most surprising news, but Nintendo recently joined Khronos Group as a contributor. It's the group that develops and standardizes OpenGL and Vulkan. The existing members include Sony, Microsoft, Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, Valve, Google, Apple, Blizzard, Unity, etc.

Being a contributor grants "full API working group participation and voting rights, and generous marketing benefits.", so I imagine joining now implies they're heavily invested in the future developments of graphics APIs

I'm pretty sure Nintendo has already been using OpenGL for a long time, but it's also entirely probable they're offering Vulkan as an alternative for NX, which might help third parties a little and help improve the system's perceived graphical performance.

nitendo could offer to do the programming for third parties, but it wouldn't solve the problem that people who buy nintendo hardware don't buy third party software

Spike Chunsoft is the second third-party developer, after Square Enix, to express interest in developing for NX (as far as I remember). They also just announced they're about to start working on Steam/PC releases.

Danganronpa and Zero Escape HD collections for NX y/n

Thyme

zero escape and 999 on steam would be nice O_0

zelda animal crossing: this time it's just amiibo collecting will save the nx

don't let's

So I wonder if the current VC collection will be available on the NX from the start and if you'll be able to just download your collection without having to buy them again or having to port and wipe your data from the Wii U. And I wonder if you'll have to make a new account or if they're keeping the current system…

Also, I just realized that Nintendo is skipping a couple or so version numbers and going straight to Nintendo10.

Wonder if licensing will prevent the VC collection from the start.

http://www.statista.com/statistics/268966/total-number-of-game-consoles-sold-worldwide-by-console-type/

Never realized that the DS and GB sold so much.

the ds and wii were monsters

together they sold over 250 million units, making the 7th gen by far the best nintendo (or any game console manufacturer) has ever had (and ever will have)
and they were both fully deserving of such incredible success srsly
by contrast, the 3ds and wii u together are in the 65 million range and will be lucky to hit 75 million (the vast majority in 3ds sales) by the time they're replaced, less than 1/3 of the 7th gen total

also, the original gameboy line had the advantage of being on the market for well over a decade before being succeeded by the advance, plus its sales are combined with those of the gameboy color

the gameboy advance's sales at 81 million are far more impressive when you consider it was only on the market for <4 years before the ds was introduced

here's a more complete list

http://www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/

though its dreamcast numbers are outdated and according to it, the wii u is actually just barely ahead of the game gear
