I have always wanted 1 or 2, but I'm starting to really want a bunch of them. Pre-ordered Toon Link last night.

Newly announced figures:
Smash Bros line: Robin, Lucina, Pac-Man, Ness, Wario, Charizard (Wave 4, Launch Date TBA)
Super Mario line: Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Bowser, Toad (Launch Mar 20, price not yet confirmed)

The Super Mario line of Amiibo is new. The main difference is appearance: different poses, different stand. An Amiibo of the same character will function the same in all games regardless which Amiibo line it's from. Toad in particular is exclusive to the Super Mario line.

also some of the amiibo functionality they announced today:
Smash Bros 3DS supports Amiibo when played on N3DS, exactly the same behavior as Wii U version
Mario Party 10 does a lot of Amiibo stuff with all Mario-related figures, including even Rosalina and Wario
Code Name Steam supports all of the Fire Emblem characters, using them to unlock that character as playable; the unlock isn't permanent as you'll have to rescan after they die. Marth's amiibo in particular is getting a rerelease so that people can actually buy him for this.

I think most amiibo actually look pretty nice. Of course they have some minor flaws that are especially noticeable when you zoom in on them with a good camera, but they're also pretty well-detailed for the size.

and most importantly they're of Nintendo characters that I actually care about

the ones i saw, in person, had glaring flaws. This was at the store so these things were brand new. like mario's mustache was painted all the way and DK looked like he had lip stick. it looked pretty bad, maybe i just saw a Bad Batch  but ,,.
