Using USB-powered hard drives on Wii U is not a good idea, especially if they're designed for USB 3.0.

Wii U's USB ports are underpowered even by USB 2.0 standards. Even flash drives show a drastic speed dip on Wii U.

unless you use a y cable to plug into two at the same time.
That supplies enough power. I have mine plugged into the two on the back, and my smash adaptor on the front
