Secondly, there are conflicting geopolitical and ethnographic realities. Russia has the largest territorial state on the planet, sharing a long border with the most populous state on the planet, China. Russia has a lot of what China wants -- raw materials.

That is a formula for serious competition down the road, and even for conflict.

why do people keep implying that china wants anything russia has badly enough for there to be potential conflict

unless russia implodes again, china will never, EVER cause trouble in/with russia over land or resources, even if it might still be bitter about the soviet/russian empire transgressions against it that are ancient history by now

if china wants something that russia has, they'll do exactly what they did in the case of that recent gas deal and say 'hey, sell that shit to us on the cheap '
