I've been interested in the Mars Volta for two years, but because of mixed reviews, I've never picked them up.

If I were to get an album, which would it be?

Also, are they at all similar to Arcade Fire?

No, they're no where near being similar to Arcade Fire. I recommend getting their first album, "De-Loused in the Comatorium", since it seems that's the one everyone loves. The Volta is a bit spastic-sounding and some people might not like the singer's voice, so it's not really for everyone.

As far as The Mars Volta goes, I honestly don't know where to tell you to start. De-Loused in the Comatorium is basically a story being told by them.
