were you holding triangle?  when you're not on the ball it's the command for the keeper to come off his line and track the ball.

also, i noticed that when you did get forward your strikers were often without support, you can select how offensive-/defensive-minded you want to be by pressing right or left representatively on the directional pad.

You mean as a pre set or in game command feature?

in-game.  there are other features you can enable with up/down on the d pad too like playing for possession/high pressure, but i hardly notice anything different when using them
