Only for Zero Suit Samus, you have to hold the shield button between character select and stage select.

Zelda and Pokemon Trainer, when selected, show the other forms in the picture displayed at each player's colored rectangle thing. Clicking on one of the forms in that picture selects it, adding a white outline around the selected form and changing the selected character name.

I don't know how Brawl+ handles what you consider direct character selection. Are Zero Suit Samus, Sheik, Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard simply added to the main character list?

i avoid the main fighting by hiding in some corner until two are eliminated and i'm left with just one severely weakened opponent i can more easily defeat
