I would go with the older DQ games because it's so awesome to get the bosses and use them as your monsters and maybe even mate them for better ones.
When you say older...?

Dragon Quest/Warrior 1-6

Maybe 7 never played it. DQ8 is griding if you don't mind that.

All I know about the new ones is that DQ Swords doesn't look like anything I'd pay $15 or more for.

Rocket Slime is amazing.
The final tank battle is fucking impossible, though. I still haven't beat it.

I beat that shit easy

When your health gets knocked down, attack Hooly and shoot him in the cannon back to his own Tank.

And use some mirrors, meteors, Lv. 3 arrows, and Lv. 3 spike balls

I need to start the whole game over.. I leant it to a friend without knowing that you could only have one file.

What happens after you beat it?

You unlock Tank battle mode (play as any tank you've had to fight, besides Hooly's), get the Hero Sword (does 120 damage)

It is, along with FF3 (FF3 Japan, not FF3 America)

He may be thinking of FF3 American which is on the SNES. (FF3 American = FF4 Japan)

FF3 American = FF6 Japan

oh god :'(

Just give Phantom Hourglass a try. If you loved Windwaker then you will like this one since it takes all of the tedious moments in Windwaker and gives a easier solution to them.

However I wouldn't recommend looking too much into as if you would expect the same quality Windwaker was, it's a good game and that's just about it. I don't exactly care for the Windwaker style or Zelda handhelds for that matter and I still find it rather enjoyable to play in my spare time at school.

PH is another generic Zelda game much like TP was.

PH and TP are just generic Zelda games. They stopped getting even close to original around the time after MM came out. Minish cap was pretty unoriginal but still enjoyable.

PH, TP are both good games, just nothing new to them ;_;

My OPINION of the best game in series: A link to the past.

Short, but fun.

I don't agree with your opinion.  baddood;
