honestly, just play the ones that actually matter before even caring about other m

zero mission, fusion, and the prime series. ii is also quite good but admittedly a black sheep for a lot of reasons and not nearly up to par with the greats.

you shouldn't. they take place after zero mission, because zero mission is a remake of the original metroid.

timeline for the good metroid games goes:

metroid/zero mission, prime 1, prime 2, prime 3, metroid ii, super metroid, metroid fusion

of course, it's not like there are huge spoilers or anything in playing prime before zero mission, but you'll appreciate certain things about prime more if you play zero mission first. a certain boss character, as well as a great deal of space pirate logbook entries, are directly referential to metroid/zero mission having occurred shortly beforehand.
