It's taught but no one pays attention and many teachers aren't even close to perfect. My Econ teacher says "were" and "was" in the wrong forms all the time, not a big deal but I notice it.

My 8th grade teacher "corrected" a error. It said "a lot" and she crossed it out and wrote "alot"
