I'm making a computer out of spare parts, but I need an OS, and my dad says that Linux is the way to go if I want to become a programmer, but I want to be able to do more then just program with my computer, and I've heard about lots of distros, but I don't know which one to pick, so Boyah, I ask you, what distro should I get Linux from and why?

If you've never used Linux before, I'd go with Ubuntu. It's a good "beginner" distro, and also has a ton of support.

Go with Fedora. Installation is easy and it comes packaged with quite a bit of good software.

Yes. Just be sure to read a little online manual for installation instructions and warnings.

Ubuntu because you don't know anything. But even then, you'll have issues and you'll be confused.

Unbuntu is a command line? gonk; Seriously though, I'm fine with a command line, but it would only be a pain if I have to remember stuff, anyways, Lawlz said something about Fedora being another good starter one, which one is better?

If you know what a partition is, then you should be fine. You can just use google and teach yourself the basics of a terminal.

Ubuntu is the most user-friendly Linux distro out there. (http://i10.tinypic.com/505zair.png) psyduck;
It's easy to install, with the great help of Wubi. Wubi (http://wubi-installer.org/) allows you to install the OS without even opening a partitioning program. Fedora has too much shit you (no, I'm not speaking in general) don't need.
You can install Wubi just by downloading the installer to your desktop, downloading the alternative install Ubuntu Feasty Fawn CD image (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download) to the same folder, launching the executable, restarting, and going through a series of easy questions to install.
Just in case your dumbassery kicks up to a whole new level, that GUI comment I made was a joke.

WHY DIDN'T YOU SAY SO EARLIER! argh; Anyways, I would like to know about both systems, but now your argument makes me want Unbuntu (not because of that GNOME -6.0 thing :|)

If you want to install it on a computer without an OS, download the Ubuntu CD image (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download), burn it and then boot from it in the computer; or order a CD (https://shipit.ubuntu.com/).

What about some image-editing, audio CD burning, DVD viewing, multitasking, email, chatting, and music?
WHICH YOU CAN DO ALL AT ONCE ON LINUX.

Today's teenage race only cares about the internet, specifically myspace and msn, and music.
God damn, nobody cares about the specifics.
