Question:
do you care about themes
Option 1: yes
votes: 0
Option 2: no
votes: 2
Essentially themes and maybe the anonboard are the primary things that'd be lost in n upgrade
I was actually the author of the SMF2.0 branch of the Anonboard mod so I know for a fact that it broke at a certain version. I think someone forked it and there may be a maintainer of that.
but we'd lose SMOKES and all the other themse that use the same branch but like boyah2.0
here's to another promise of me gauging interest then DOING NOTHING
it depends what the default of boyah 2 looks like
i'd probs be fine with just different color schemes of the default tbh
yeah just make it look like a newer/cleaner version of smokes and i'd be good
wheres that thread we had exploring themes though
go find that thread
im too lazy to saearch
also whatever snorkel did at some point made the backup a lot faster.
like 30 seconds for each instead of the 10 minutes before

good2know scripts i wrote almost a decade ago still work lol
>mfw it also shows that the last 3 backups were today, 2016, and 2013
jesus
lmao
i can probably remake smokes maybe if wanted
we need more user research
honestly i just don't like the way the updated forums look, based on when we were looking at themes last time
i like the way boyah looks now :(

i mean through the magic of css with enough of me not being lazy it could look exactly the same

There's actually a bunch of table changes and shit that make porting the CSS diffciult
you could probably clone the colors tho
eh i hate tables anyway, i sit around writing css all day i could probably figure it out, or close enough anyway
i could not possibly care less about themes and i've always found them to be a weak reason to delay the implementation of boyah 2.0
1. if we end up having to use generic default smf 2.0 as a trade-off for boyah 2.0, i'm completely okay with that, i'd get used to it eventually and the benefits of the upgrade would certainly outweigh the costs of theme loss/2.0 ugliness
2. but that won't happen because if generic default smf 2.0 truly is hideous enough, someone here will be motivated to, at the very least, make a few different basic color themes that are more palatable
3. we already have members here now in this thread offering to make full themes
4. we simply won't know what themes we'll even want/need until we make the switch and get a sense of the look and feel of smf 2.0
so yeah i vote that we proceed with or without any themes, we can worry about basic cosmetics later
I've been waiting for 2.0 and I know a few things would be fixed, but honestly what benefits outweigh the costs of having it look like a generic shitforum
like what actual benefits are we going to be seeing from the move to 2.0

i did notice how quick that was
good to know that snorkel can still be useful even in absentia happydood;

real talk tho, what are you so afraid to lose? befuddlement
even if something were to happen, life goes on, new posts get made
remember nyerp's ragepost after we lost several months of activity due to a failed backup or w/e
i genuinely agreed with nyerp
It used to be automated weekly but when we moved servers like 1million times the cronjob kept breaking
can we fix that y/n
I could but, tbh it's kind of useless unless the backup is also moved offsite as well, and the original script didn't fix that either.
Because if the server goes down (which is what happened last time) it doesn't matter if we have hourly backups on the same server.
i see
So what might be the most effective way for us to go about automating backups on a regular schedule? befuddlement
Find me som free offsite storage solution that can be script lol
I think maybe amazon's free tier of aws could work.
just how much data does a boyah backup take up lol
Database as 123MB and the forum directory was 138mb
that's much, much tinier than expected, but i guess it is overwhelmingly text data
to think, all ten years of boyah could fit onto a cd
also, i can't see any reason why amazon wouldn't work

i compress both into tarballs which helps (because as you said text. compresses easily)
how large are both data sets uncompressed lol sillydood;

also makes sense since the bulk of the forum data is also image files that don't compress as nicely.

here's another reason i'd be absolutely loath(e) to have to start boyah anew due to some preventable error:

oh kaz you're so innocent and adorable 5thgrade;
how do you find these posts anyway lmao
I would lose the ability to do this. smithicide;
so, so long as data loss is preventable, let's do what we can to prevent it
it's just a matter of automating a monthly backup to amazon
so about themese
