So on the 27th, I was driving from my old hometown of Baudette, MN all the way back to where I currently live, Roseville, MN. About five and a half hours. Roads were really shitty and icy, and I made it about halfway before suddenly hitting a really rough patch of ice and skidding into the other lane, getting t-boned right in my car's wimpy driver's side by a pickup truck. I fell unconscious immediately upon impact. Woke up later in a hospital. Broken left hip, slightly messed up ribs, many cuts in my face's left side that required minor plastic surgery. My car is totaled of course, im so tred rn cause they keep giving me pircosec.
Damn that sucks. was that other guy with you? (biig goop)

hey this might sound weird, but remember that medical bills are negotiable after the fact, in fact they're designed to be negotiated so have your folks or yourself when you get better exercise that option rather than paying everything up front. it will save you a lot of money.

Holy shit, broken HIP? Fuck dude, I'm glad you're okay enough to be posting at least. I'm sure you'll recover just fine, but in the meantime, I'm wishing you the best.

Man that really sucks. I hope you have halfway decent health insurance? :(
Physical therapy has been pretty minimal so far. I can get around on my right leg in a walker.
I've been so tired. That pircosec knocks me out so fast. The food here is all right. Waiting on a burger rn. I haven't taken a shit since I got here lol so I'm trying to change that.

Wouldn't your car insurance help with the bills?
My car insurance will pay for the injuries and car damages the other party suffered, sure. Anything else? Doubt it.
I cant even imagine how much this is a inevitably going to cost me.
Michigan has no fault insurance I know it is different.
Hope you recover fast and get back to as close to normal as you can soon. :3
Yeah I mean I'll be fine. The only thing that concerns me really is the idea of needing another new car already, with the little finances I have.

Update: pain is slightly less now, but I still need to be on painkillers when attempting to get up and do anything. Also need them first thing in the morning because after sleep I am very sore. The bruise on my hip is gigantic and spectacularly darkened.
I'm staying with my family. They're all pretty helpful and willing to get me anything I may want. Mom rigged her big shower to have a chair in it so i can clean myself.

some lady hit my car a few days ago and it was raining. it was basically a love tap. i didn't even want to get out cuz i don't like hassles and i knew it was no big deal. but she kept following me like a good girl so i stopped. she start to apologize--i'm like waving my hand it's fine, point to area, no damage, all good. she is in this awed faze and mild happy shock and i'm like that's right baby i'm awesome, have a good night. i know she will always remember me in a good way. and that's what it's all about.

What's even the charge? Why do you have to pay a fine?
Misdemeanor, failure to drive with due caution
Because said ice caused me to slide into oncoming traffic I guess. To the court it's probably a pretty minor auto-related misdemeanor, and I won't know until the hearing is over whether I have to pay a fine or not.
i've literally never in my life heard about a person being in a serious accident and then getting charged for it. what the fuck?

So, update:
John and I drove a little over two hours to Duluth yesterday so I could get x-rays done at the hospital i was at before. It's kind of annoying that I couldn't just get a transfer to a hospital down here in Minneapolis, but oh well. My x-rays were just fine, so while I still have some soreness and bruising, for all intents and purposes my hip fractures have pretty much healed. My forehead lacerations are also healing up pretty nicely now, there's never any blood on the bandages when I change them now. There was for a while, probably because I had the stitches removed too soon idk.
So all this means that I'm allowed to walk without crutches. And I have been since we got back yesterday. And so far it's going all right - I can't walk a long time without my left leg getting kinda stiff and sore, and I hobble a bit while walking, but other than that I'm pretty quickly getting back to the point of being able to walk normally.
This means that technically start working again as soon as I feel ready. But here's the problem with that: I don't have a car anymore, and I'm far too poor to buy one. I'll have to look into dealership financing I guess, or some sort of loan. Or just hold out until I have a few grand? Idk. But not having a car means I have to use a bus or uber to work, so that'll be new as well. Means the same for any time I want to do anything in the city, and I have quite a few shows coming up starting March 1.
I'm so fucked lol, this would all be so much easier if I had literally ANY extra money. I don't even really have enough to get through all of February's bills. I'm still waiting on a check from the auto salvage place for my smashed G6, and I'm waiting on student loan tax forms to be able to finish doing my tax return. No idea how quickly I'll have any extra cash available, and even if I started working in two weeks, that's an extra two weeks (at least) after that before I'll have a paycheck. So I might have that in time to pay February rent and thus be ok for bills through Feb, but beyond that I'll still have fucking nothing.
This is, of course, not counting any fines I may or may not incur due to the court hearing.
Question of the now: has anyone ever financed for a used car before?

Well that's good that you can move around more but yeesh that's a lot of pressure to be under :(
I financed my car through my bank, USAA. They even discussed the car with the dealer on the phone to make sure the car was worth what I was paying. I don't know if a lot of banks do that but it was very handy. Do you have good credit??
do you have zipcar up there? idk if thats feasible, but if you get sick of uber i dont think zipcar is too expensive.

Question of the now: has anyone ever financed for a used car before?
I'm currently financing my car. it was a simple enough process, found a dude on craigslist and he met me at the bank. signed the papers and i was on my way.
It's better to get pre approved for a loan. I got approaved for a 10k loan for a car. its better to go to the bank first and see what you qualify for so that way you don't end up with a car that's bigger than your wallet (my sister went to the dealership for her element, ended up overpaying on the total and had high monthly payments.) My bank had kickbacks like getting a better interest rate if you get a newer vehicle and/or a fuel efficient vehicle. That made me get a newer car (an 08 Outback, which is a fine car but new car designs are not that attractive to me). Best thing to do is talk to your banks loan officer once you're on your feet and they can give you a good idea of where to start.

im legitimately not sure how else i'm going to get back home after, say, a live show downtown that ends past midnight
barring a three hour bus ride or a taxi (which would cost like $40 (including tip) from downtown to my apartment. 21 minute drive)
Do not donate money to the Über Jew
okay the Lyft jew then
point still stands, those and a traditional cab are my only decent way to get back home from downtown past midnight, unfortunately
I'm still confused as to how the state can charge you with a criminal offense for an accident that wasn't caused by OUI or some other egregious offense that constitutes wreckless driving.
I'd say as long as you weren't going more than 10-20+ the speed limit in icy conditions a civil penalty is all that is warranted.

I'm as confused as you are. While technically I don't personally remember anything about the accident, ice is really the only explanation for how my car both drifted into the other lane and managed to turn around so that my driver's side was facing oncoming traffic. But I don't know what the other party and/or witnesses told the state trooper, maybe there's some conflicting information or just not enough of it idk. Also, the trooper did put in his police report that the roads were icy, I specifically remember there being some ice on the road, and as far as I can remember, he said that a witness account mostly matched what I surmised happened
In some ways, not being able to remember the accident is frustrating
Uberpool is only marginally more expensive than public transportation, at least here. Give that a shot. Not sure if Lyft does something similar

It takes so little to get spun around on ice. Someone behind you could of taped your bumper, a slight change in speed, or just because ice is like that.
I still find it strange you have to go to court. In Michigan the cop decides what happened and if you get a ticket and disagree then you go to court.
good luck kaz O_0
nothing really happened today. i have a continuance (a delay basically) so my public defender can go through the discovery procedure, gathering information and such and then i have to appear again in two weeks

Also, the trooper did put in his police report that the roads were icy, I specifically remember there being some ice on the road, and as far as I can remember, he said that a witness account mostly matched what I surmised happened

do i need to say it a third time? sillydood; :(
So I called my public defender today. He went through all the records and witness accounts and such with me. Basically what it boils down to is that the state thinks I should have been going slower considering the icy conditions. A witness account estimated my speed at 45-50. It was a 60 zone. So I was going under the speed limit already due to icy road conditions. But shit still happened.
There's two reasons I can't really dispute this. One is that I don't remember the incident, so I can't just say I was going slower than estimated. Cause I really don't know for sure. The second is that, if I were to say that the 45 I may have been going was "slow enough" given the conditions and that I was driving with due care and shit just happened...well, it just wouldn't fly. It would be extremely, extremely unlikely for this sort of defense to hold up, according to my public defender.
There's really no choice for me but to do a no contest plea. Basically, I don't remember the incident so I can't dispute nor confirm the reports and witness accounts. I'll be found guilty, but hopefully the punishment won't be too harsh.
hella dumb
Well judge he doesn't remember so he's got to be guilty. One witness ( some Joe blow) estimates 45 to 50. So... one I don't remember + one witness guessing = guilty. smh
to be fair, that joe blow's estimate is probably pretty accurate considering he was driving thirty yards behind me
if there's one eye witness and his estimate is that you were going only 75-83% of the posted limit, i.e. you reduced your speed by 17-25% of the posted limit in icy/snowy conditions
I would think that's sufficient.
You'd think that what you've endured is more than enough punishment. That fucking sucks dude

i don't get this at all
you were going well below the speed limit and they're still trying to say you were careless? that's completely fucked, if i was you i'd be fighting that shit tooth and nail. i absolutely would not roll over on a bullshit claim like that
Did anyone else get hurt? I can't remember.
Yes, the three people in the Silverado sustained minor injuries and more than enough property damage (the truck as well as the ice fishing house they were towing)
Also, while the idea of fighting it tooth and nail (like taking it to an actual jury trial instead of just traffic court) sounds nice, if it goes south in the end I'll just wind up being punished more harshly. Plus, it's more than a little difficult to argue I was "driving with due care" when I ended up getting in an accident and endangering life and property anyway.
I guess I am assuming everyone was going about the same speed. If so imo going any slower would of been more of a hazard.
You sure are in a tough spot Kaz with not much choice.

shit happens dude, you can take all necessary precautions but still slip on ice. what more could you have honestly done?...... driving is dangerous in even the most perfect conditions. also, what kind of punishments are you looking at here?
iirc it wouldn't be more than a few hundred dollars worth of a fine. that's what my defender predicted at least. but I guess it's hard to be sure.
Given the situation, with the vagueness of the charge against me as well as all the shit I've had to deal with, hopefully the state prosecutors and judge will go easy on me.
This just floors me. In Michigan if you get a ticket you can contest it. Then there is a hearing between you, the cop who gave you the ticket and a magistrate. If the cop fails to show up it's dismissed. If the magistrate thinks you are guilty then you can go before a judge. If the judge thinks you are innocent the whole thing is dropped.
You would be surprised how many times the cop never shows.
Its over. I entered a "no regard" plea, which is basically the no contest I mentioned on the previous page. $285 fine plus surcharges and defender's fee, which came to $410 total. Unsupervised probation for one year.

what the fuck....
I'm curious, what exactly is unsupervised probation? Like how do they enforce it? I'm unfamiliar

It just means I have to stay law abiding for a year. I don't have to report to a probation officer or anything.
Also, said fee is pretty small honestly so I guess Im at least happy about that
Also also, apparently it's "norgaard" plea, not "no regard" lol
Sounds about right, an officer once tagged me with "unreasonable and impudent" speed which essentially means driving at a speed considered unsafe in inclement weather conditions. Granted, I was going 5 mph over in clear and warm weather, but the fine was somewhere in the $300 range
They should really make these tickets scale with income though, the wealthy can speed without much fear but when I received that ticket it was half a months rent and a quarter of my monthly salary.

shut the fuck up commie i got mine fuck you
Also yes, flat fines are regressive and usually only serve to majorly impair poor while inconveniencing or not mattering to wealthy people.

fine
my hip still has slight soreness now and then, but i rarely notice it. every once in a while it may act up a bit. tight pants make it more likely to happen. i still can't truly comfortably lay on my left side.
my forehead and my eyelid still have marks, but they're getting smaller all the time.

this still happens to me, but it's not pants or clothing that cause it
in my case, it's the long-term weather changes brought about by seasonal transitions (hot-cold dilation of metallic implants brought about by seasonal changes -> slight but temporary pain/discomfort as surrounding area adjusts)
buuut my case is just a
little different from yours so i should probably stop making direct comparisons lol
Quote from: Shinobu Oshino on May 13, 2017, 09:21:43 PMi still can't truly comfortably lay on my left side.
but first, some more direct comparisons:
if you're like me, that might take about a full year, give or take some months, to really subside
i had a miserable time laying on my right side for long time before one day i just noticed i could do it without too much discomfort
my overall flexibility in that joint and leg has been reduced slightly, and there is still some mild muscular weakness, but neither of those is necessarily permanent and i cold fix both by just exercising more (...or at all)
and in practice it woks just fine
as of recently i even regained the ability to run normally lol
