Title: goodbye, mac
Post by: snorkel on June 27, 2009, 05:24:57 PM
I think I made my decision. I'm offing my iMac in a favor of a custom-built i7 monster which will be jointly inhabited by OSx86, an as yet undecided Linux distro, and Windows 7.

My iMac's 3.06ghz core 2 duo just doesn't make me feel good enough about myself when I go to bed at night. and the stupid thing can only handle 4gb of DDR2 RAM. it's bullshit. with this new beast I plan to eventually install 16 or 24gb of RAM and dedicate half of it to a photoshop swap drive, which may be supremely ridiculous.

And for the same reasons I don't use my Mac. I never understood why anyone other than 13 year old girls would want a Mac when they can get a monster PC for the same price. The only "advantages" I've heard of that a Mac has is a lighter OS, which isn't really a big deal anymore since any decent computer has atleast 4GBs of RAM.

Uh to be fair the 4GB RAM limit on your Mac has to do with 32-bit processors, not the Mac.

A Core 2 Duo does have 64 bit functionality, and uh that will be taken care of in Snow Leopard. The machines are expensive though.

A usable computer is 1 gig, a decent computer is 2 gigs, 3 is very nice, 4 is crazy good, anything higher is unnecessary.

Well you didn't have Windows XP family edition with 10 different accounts that my brother made slowing yours down.
Regardless, didn't it feel awesome to finally get a worthwhile computer?

let me rephrase this, i can barely afford a cheap socket 775 motherboard :'(
i need like $40-50 to get at least a halfway decent one and that money is scarce, especially with my job

if he were doing rigorous video editing he would want more than that, but for any other reason you don't really even need that much
not even for gaming

Of course not for gaming  doodhuh;

I need it (and probably more) for Photoshop and other CS4 apps, because when you're doing large projects with either huge files (like 500mb PSDs) or a shitload of files, it has to store them all in RAM while you're working on them, or else start using your hard drive for virtual RAM, which usually happens, and leads to frustration. the solution is more RAM and in the future (i.e. when I have more money) I will get enough (16gb or so when 4gb dimms become cheap) to make a dedicated photoshop swap drive in the ram, which will be very very fast.
