if he were doing rigorous video editing he would want more than that, but for any other reason you don't really even need that much

Of course not for gaming  doodhuh;

I need it (and probably more) for Photoshop and other CS4 apps, because when you're doing large projects with either huge files (like 500mb PSDs) or a shitload of files, it has to store them all in RAM while you're working on them, or else start using your hard drive for virtual RAM, which usually happens, and leads to frustration. the solution is more RAM and in the future (i.e. when I have more money) I will get enough (16gb or so when 4gb dimms become cheap) to make a dedicated photoshop swap drive in the ram, which will be very very fast.
