Question:
Are they?
Option 1: Yes.
Option 2: No.
Well, I'm a sophomore and I've been brought up with the option of taking AP classes next year.
Are they really worth it?
Saves money and time in the future. If you think you can handle it then yes, do it.
Yes, definitely. They give you the chance to start building up college credits already if you pass the AP exams, and trust me, it feels great being exempt from certain classes in college because of it. Not to mention the money saved by taking less classes in college.
At some colleges, passing certain AP classes can substitute for college credit.
I never took them, but from what I heard, they're not even that much harder than honors courses, so I don't see what the downside is.
Then again, my high school sucked, so that ought to be taken into consideration.
Yes.
I hear they are so focused on having you pass the test that you never actually grasp anything like you would in an actual college course.
My AP English class is so much better than any other english class. Same withmy AP Calc.. even though I have an awful grade. I think that might just be because my two teachers are fantastic though, so who knows.

Some of them are notorious for that, yeah. My AP classes both avoided that, however. In fact my AP English class practically avoided the test until the last week. AP Calc was a nice balance of test-style worksheets, exams, normal assignments, etc. It was like a normal class with the AP stuff strewn throughout.
if you plan on applying to a regular college and your school doesn't have absolutely awful teachers, then yes. typically you learn more, or are at least challenged to learn more, and you get college credits if you get good scores on the ap tests

That depends on the teacher, and even if so, so what? Unless it's something you're going to have to build on when you get to college it's really nice to get it out of the way and save a lot of money.

My teachers never even mentioned the test until the month before it came up, they taught it very well. APs also look great on your resume, making it much easier to get into better colleges as long as you do well.
yes, because it saves money, i think.
i never took them. i took regular classes.
i figured i wouldn't need to take those classes in my career field
You're only a sophmore, meaning 10th grade? I could have sworn you were older. And from what I've can guess, they are, as all the smart people in my school who were in honors seem to be taking them.
man do it, you're smart, if i was even as half as smart as you are i would be happy.

How do you know about my intelligence?
Yes.
I managed to get out of Calc I and Pysics I, II and III from AP Calculus and AP Physics.
YES! I really wish I would have taken more AP classes in high school. I only took one.
All of the kids who took AP classes are way ahead in college. They are taking sophomore classes during the first semester of freshman year.
by all means. If you do well enough, they really pay off.

because sometimes you say intelligent things.

YES!
They'll significantly free up your schedule in college. Trust me, I'm SO glad I took an AP course.
I am currently in Sophomore standing at college because I earned 16 college credits from my APs... so yeah, it's definitely worth it
absolutely
i'll be taking a few next year actually, i'll take any ap course i can get
By the way, for those of you who did take APs, how many did you take? befuddlement

AP Euro
AP Lit
AP US History
AP US Government
oh
i think the only ones i'll be able to get are ap biology and chem, maybe english and history if i'm very lucky smithicide;
i can't even get into a damn honors class
I don't want to take more than two AP classes a year, so I have a choice between AP English or AP US History. My major will be pre-medicine, so I'm thinking about English.

I'd say go for English out of the two, yeah.
I took AP Calc and AP Chem.
the first one was fun.
im a sophomore and taking AP classes now
trust me, its not extremely hard, youll need to take the classes eventually anyways, and the >$100 for taking the test at the end of the year is better than hundreds or even thousands in tuition.

I took AP English 11 and AP Calc.
Although my school has another weird ranking of classes called DC which basically means it's AP without a test to take. So I automatically get the college credits. And of those I took DC Bio and DC Robotics and my Calc. class is both DC and AP.
But to answer the OP's question, yes they're worth it as has been stated many times in this thread.

I've already decided on AP Biology. I just want to decide between AP US History and AP English for the other AP class I'm taking next year. There's no way I'm taking more than two.

AP World History is bullshit.
Wait, I thought Bassir said he was a Senior or something doodthing;
Also, I'm going to say that they are, but I recall my sister who's in college saying that you have to take the classes in college anyways just because. So, the AP classes for the most part count for nothing.
But I don't remember if she actually said that or not. I just vaguely remember her saying that APs are a waste of time.

They only count for nothing if you go to a prick college.

I'm exempt from 3 required courses at my college because of my APs doodhuh;
They only dont count if you do poorly on the AP tests

I knew someone would say that doodthing;
She's passed all of her AP tests (Except for 1, I think), so it wasn't that. I think it was just because of what college she went to (UCLA).

Yes, there are colleges that don't give a shit about what AP class you took in high school because really, high school is high school.

Yeah. The majority of colleges take them.. but some, espevially some prestigious colleges, won't. I have a friend who had 4 AP credits that didn't count at MIT.
Not if you are someone like me. Who simply takes it because i feel it will help my college acceptance.
But really, if you are not AP material, just don't do it. It is a huge waste of effort for something that I probably would have accomplished without the AP classes (college acceptance). and I didn't even pass any of the AP exams, so I don't even get credit.
Colossal waste of effort.

Yes, but better schools are less likely to accept you without APs
An 80 in an AP class is weighted like a 90 in a normal class, but colleges equate it to a 100 because of the significance of challenging yourself with an advanced course. I take AP World History and will later take AP US History, AP Gov't, and AP Biology.
At some colleges, taking an AP class can exempt you from the time and price of a college course. Even if it doesn't, it's great for getting into a college. I enjoy my AP World History class because the lessons are more in depth and the class discusses and takes interest in history, instead of bitching and whining because they have to know what the capital of Bulgaria is.
It could be because my teacher is awesome. Students in the other AP World teacher's class dislike it.

Colleges expect at least a B in AP courses.

I'd take an 84 in an AP over a 95 in a standard any day
80 isn't B?

passing is not the same as doing well. you need at least a 4, usually need 5's.
right now, I hate AP classes.

If you pass the AP tests and the class yes.
I checked yesterday and with all my AP's, I would have upwards of 20 units covered when I enter college next year.
Hey guess what guys, AP TESTING IS THIS WEK.
Wednesday is calc and Thursday is english.
And I am sincerely screwed for both, especially calc. ^__^

One of the school districts here on Long Island closed all week due to an outbreak of H1N1. I wonder what'll happen to the poor souls who needed to take AP exams. n_u
