It's not about caring, it's about knowing.

ARPANET was largely responsible for the internet, which was a spawn of the DARPA, which was part of the Department of Defense. So not exactly the military.
The Department of Defense is the military. D.A.R.P.A. is an organization founded and operated by the military to come up with new technology and innovations. It facilitates, funds and directs such projects.
So who is the military's biggest supplier ?

Well in 2007 for example the DoD received 20% of the Federal Budget, roughly 439 Billion. The Navy received 29%, the Air Force 28%, the Army 25% and the rest is used for other organizations.
That's pretty cool Socks.
