Florida has the the Florida Comprehension Assessment Test (FCAT). I just feel like sharing a few questions from a sample math 9th grade booklet I got today, actual questions that most 9th grade Floridians are challenged by.
Kids are allowed to use basic calculators.
Since I can't find a square root symbol, I'll type sqrt(x) for that.
Quote1. In 1997, the population of the United States was expected to increase by approximately 10.4 million people by the year 2002. What is 10.4 million expressed in scientific notation?

B. 1.04 x 10-6
C. 1.04 x 107
D. 1.04 x 10-7
Quote2. An architect found a side of a right triangle on a blueprint to be sqrt(21) centimeters. Which point is closest to sqrt(21) on a number line?
(number line is shown with intervals 0-10 marked. P is between 3-4, Q between 4-5, R between 6-7, and S after 10)
F. P
G. Q
H. R
I. S
Quote5. Look at the function table below. What is the value of y when x=5?
(grid in the answer)
Quote6. The height, H, in centimeters, of a woman whose humerus bone is x centimeters long can be represented by the formula below.
H = 2.75x + 71.48
Based on the formula, what is the height, to the nearest centimeter, of a woman whose humerus bone is 33 centimeters long?
(grid in the answer)
Quote8. The graph of y = 3x + 2 is shown
(insert said graph here)
How would the graph change if the 2 in the equasion was replaced with a 5?
A. The line would remain parallel with a shift down of 3 units.
B. The line would remain parallel with a shift down of 2 units.
C. The line would remain parallel with a shift up of 3 units.
D. The line would remain parallel with a shift up of 2 units.

QuoteIf anyone ever wanted to change his or her mind during the journey to freedom and return, Tubman pulled out a gun and said, "You'll be free or die a slave!" Tubman knew that if anyone turned back, it would put her and the other escaping slaves in danger of discovery, capture or even death. She became so well known for leading slaves to freedom that Tubman became known as the "Moses of Her People." Many slaves dreaming of freedom sang the spiritual "Go Down Moses." Slaves hoped a savior would deliver them from slavery just as Moses had delivered the Israelites from slavery.
