Florida has the the Florida Comprehension Assessment Test (FCAT). I just feel like sharing a few questions from a sample math 9th grade booklet I got today, actual questions that most 9th grade Floridians are challenged by.

Kids are allowed to use basic calculators.
Since I can't find a square root symbol, I'll type sqrt(x) for that.

1. In 1997, the population of the United States was expected to increase by approximately 10.4 million people by the year 2002. What is 10.4 million expressed in scientific notation?

Who the hell would run to Mexico when they live in Massachusetts? Canada is far closer and they speak English [I guess français aussi].
