I have kinda been out of music for the last 2 years.
See, I had itunes hooked up to my comp in late 2006 and was obsessed with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Snow Patrol, Linkin park, Blink 182, Sum 41, and more shitty music. My computer kinda exploded and I never bothered changing any of the songs on my ipod. So, while waiting in line for my permit yesterday, I was listening to it and I realized how long it's been since I changed anything and how all that music sucks.
Anyways, I want some new music since I'm getting a new computer shortly and have like 100$ in itunes giftcards to waste.
I'm still into punk stuff like Blink 182 and Sum 41, just not those 2 bands or any of the other blink 182 bands (boxcar racer, etc) since I've heard all those songs 10000 times.
I also love Red Hot Chili peppers, just not their new stuff since I've heard it 10000 times. I'm also not really into classic rock that much (AC/DC, insert classic rock band here, etc).
I just want some music that I can get into again. Anybody have some nice bands?
I was going to suggest some artists, but then I saw that you're going to pay for them, so I need to revise the list since I can't find some of their stuff on iTunes.
okie
Immortal Technique
Jedi Mind Tricks
CunninLynguists
Unified School District
im too lazy lol
Dropkick Murphys? But if you're into punk, you'd probably already have them
Captain Beefheart and Goldfrapp.
Michael Jackson is also good and it doesn't matter whether or not he made sweet love to children.
The Flaming Lips
Symphony X
Muse
Pink Floyd
Opeth
The Mars Volta

Heard of them, I don't think I've heard them.
Also, what's one of Muse's good songs? My friend was obessing over them a while ago.

You might want to start with Muse's more "sugar-coated" stuff. By sugar-coated, I mean stuff like radio staples that generally everyone likes, not stuff that only fans seem to like, you know?
Might as well start with "Knights of Cydonia," "Plug In Baby," "Starlight," and "Supermassive Black Hole." But don't take my word for it, because I'm not a huge fan or anything. Maybe you should listen to Thief more than me once he replies.

They ARE punk, they're just more generic than other bands.
Talking Heads are good if you're into the whole "Art-Punk" scene
Cake
Oasis
Our Lady Peace

Well you should try the Murphys sometime... It's a great blend of Irish, punk, and rock music elements.
In my opinion, the best MUSE song is either "Our time is running out" or "Knights of Cydonia".
Merzbow.

Not generic punk. More like, generic-pop-punk (and pop-punk is a fucking oxymoron). Seriously, what the Hell is punk about I'm Feeling This or All The Small Things? It's more pop than punk tbh. And if they really were punk, they wouldn't make shitty music that makes 12 year old girls scream when it's played on MTV.
Let me tell you a story about a small Californian band known as Black Flag. Drugs, sex, rock n' roll, it was that life for an L.A. punk in the late 70's. But unlike other bands, getting big was a lot harder. In fact, their most popular song, TV Party, was made as a joke. So, they became well known for their fast paced, heavy, and loud punk tunes in the early 80s. But what did they do? They made My War, a record mainly consisting of slow, long, and 'grungey' songs. Their fans? A lot of them were pissed that Black Flag slowed down. But they did it anyways, and hey, a bunch of guys in Seattle liked it, and it became a big influence to grunge.
It's really sad what the term 'punk' is being used for.
Ok, I see what you mean.
I've always had them refered to as punk, and never really thought about it.

Wow. I just flamed the shit out of two of your favorite bands and you accepted the criticism. I love you.

Well, yeah, but I still like them doodthing;
I don't really care if it's not real punk or whatever.
Well I personally think they're pieces of shit, but yeah. A more correct term is pop-punk.
Ok. I couldn't really care less about what other people think about the music that I like. If you let other people influence what you like to listen to, you'd be retarded.

Yeah, I've gotten some of their songs off there
Vendetta Valentine.
'Nuff said
no wait, failure logic is failure.
I mean, do you think we'd all know of the Beatles if people didn't listen to what people suggested they listen to? fuck no. and if they didn't get famous enough off of Please Please Me and shit, there'd be no Revolver.

I'll still listen to stuff that people suggest to me, but I'm not going to let them decide if I like it or not baddood;
I just started a topic on Kanute. They're pretty unheard of but really great. Kanute.net for free downloads.
Dude, no david. Dig out some old velvet undergournd or television. I bet you could get into the violent femmes if you tried hard enough.
I don't really have a feel for what you'd like, so I'll recommend a variety of lesser known bands you might like:
Tapes 'n Tapes (indie-ish rock)
Aneuretical (sort of selectively appealing, but I think they're good)
The Mars Volta (not lesser known, obviously, but belongs on any "recommended" list)
Beirut (something you'll either really like or not like at all)
The Black Keys (pretty popular; their new album is excellent)
The Blue Van (similar to Black Keys, like new blues-rock)
Building Better Bombs (hard rock/punk, a small minneapolis band but I think they're on iTunes)
Patrick Cleandenim (weird turn-of-the-century inspired light rock, another love it or hate it thing)
And, my favorite, Murder By Death, which is western-inspired rock.

I second Television.
Green Day (Insomniac is a great album)
Rise Against (Prayer of the Refugee is a good first song)
The Ramones
Incubus (Not punk, but still a good band)
Three Days Grace
You'd also do good to check out Gang of Four. The Red Hot Chili Peppers took a lot from them.

Try out the modern lovers or patti smith.
