maybe

how are you liking it so far

how does it compare to the original dark souls
Title: Re: Dark Souls 2
Post by: TooB on March 09, 2014, 03:38:14 PM
quite a bit. Its very similar in structure of course, and I love that fast travel is available from the start, which makes exploring new areas a little less stressful.

i cant be sure, but the animations in combat seem to take longer to be able to swing and then block, leaving you open, but that could just be the class i picked (warrior).

they also seem to have brought back a number of features from Demons. such as when your undead, your life is cut by a certain percentage, and you have healing items again, though you still have the estus flask

Im havng a blast with it though
cant go wrong with more souls!

So, After reading a coupe reviews, it sounds like there are a few new nuances to combat, such as rolling not granting as long of invulnerability as it did before.

Man this game did a lot better than i thought it would though.
Thats good

likewise

i honestly expected it to be at least a few points below the previous two, especially since miyazaki's role in development was greatly reduced

but instead, reviewers seem to like it slightly more

i still have my fair share of concerns, but the overwhelmingly positive reception has mollified them somewhat
I'm really liking DaS2, it has a really good feel to it. I'm digging how everything looks too. Those huge ogre things at the beginning certainly are terrifying. I am having a hard time picking which covenant I want to be in though lol

so this whole enemy extinction thing. normal enemies can be killed permanently. most people are saying it seems to take 15 kills to make an enemy stop respawning forever.

pros:
-less enemies in your way if you're having to do the same area over and over

cons:
-soul farming obviously limited
-if you miss a rare drop and you've killed all the enemies that drop it permanently, you're boned. you'll have to try again in NG+.

in terms of difficulty, it's a double-edged sword. obviously you'll be farming less souls and less effigies so eventually becoming stuck at 50% health with no more effigies to farm in an area is a very real possibility, making boss strategy that much more important. at the same time though, your path to the boss will obviously be much easier.

i mostly dislike this system, largely for the issue of missing rare drops, but i guess i can see why From might have thought it was a good idea.
Title: Re: Dark Souls 2
Post by: Kalahari Inkantation on March 16, 2014, 11:04:45 PM
the permadeath of enemies is the one element that had me most worried about das2, precisely because farming, either for souls, or revival items, or ore, is sometimes crucial to making any real progress in these games

i feel like the path to a boss is almost never as much of a problem as bosses themselves are, or at least that was the case in dark souls, and i don't think it's ever once taken even me of all people 15+ attempts to get to the area boss in either demon's or dark souls (and anyone having so much trouble en route to the boss would likely have an absolutely miserable time with the boss itself), so i really don't think this decision was primarily made to moderate the game's difficulty at all

it seems like this new aspect exists purely to limit farming

how very spiteful of from software

in any case, until i've played it myself, i will assume that the overwhelmingly positive fan and media reception to the game indicates that it isn't an issue that ever really becomes insurmountable or overly frustrating
Title: Re: Dark Souls 2
Post by: Kalahari Inkantation on March 16, 2014, 11:25:06 PM
that being said, there is a rare consumable item in game that can be burned at bonfires to resurrect area enemies, though at a difficulty level one step above your current playthrough

i'd really rather not have to rely on a rare consumable for that, though

i like having the assurance that even in times of great hardship, i can always resort to farming until i'm better prepared for confrontation

though i suppose it's that very sense of security that from was looking to eliminate
Title: Re: Dark Souls 2
Post by: Snowy on March 16, 2014, 11:37:13 PM
you can always farm the bosses by being summoned in another game, so it isn't a huge problem.
Title: Re: Dark Souls 2
Post by: Kalahari Inkantation on March 16, 2014, 11:46:58 PM
the soul problem can be circumvented that way, but there are likely to be plenty of other necessary consumables i'll find myself without easy access to once the enemies within an area are extinct myface;

but w/e i'll see how it goes once i'm playing it myself
Title: Re: Dark Souls 2
Post by: TooB on March 17, 2014, 10:00:46 AM
I dont mind it at all. Probably because I dont delve that deep into the souls games systems.
So i have no complaints about it.

For someone like me, it will go like,  man i died a lot on that boss, it will be annoying to get back to it....
Oh wait enemies are gone! Sweet! Time to die on the boss again!

Also, i dont know if this is related to help with alleviating the fact that enemies can die for good.....
But you can eventually respec your characters stats.
So thats something.

Title: Re: Dark Souls 2
Post by: Samus Aran on March 17, 2014, 01:19:43 PM
i haven't really played the game all that much yet, haven't even gotten to the first boss, but one thing i will say is that, for better or worse, DaSII is more "video gamey" than the previous two Souls games

in that the presentation is more standardized, from the redone menus to the sound effects

i think that generally the menu system is more user-friendly now (without some giant list to sift through, and without always having to press square to get stats for equipment), but i can't help but feel as if it's not as visually appealing lol

but oh man the animations and such are all just so much nicer and more fluid, though this is partly because you're a billion times slower lol

minor things
Title: Re: Dark Souls 2
Post by: TooB on March 17, 2014, 03:25:30 PM
I dont really see it as " a billion times slower" but there is a slight decrease in animation recovery, but notthat much.

And im still not sjre what you mean by " video gamey" when you mention sfx especially. They sound pretty much the same to me

And as for the menus, those are gamey by nature lol
Title: Re: Dark Souls 2
Post by: TooB on March 17, 2014, 03:30:01 PM
Basically, what im saying, is that if you feel the need to complain about the menus, then the game must be pretty damn good.

Not that im saying you cant mention things that bother you of course. I just dont see the problems, but i dont really have that "critical eye"

i mentioned them because i noticed them and because this is a thread where i can post things about this video game lol

i'm not "complaining" per se, just posting what i thought as i was playing

and also it's not just "animation recovery" - one of the biggest speed changes is that your shield draw speed is actually significantly slower than dark souls. but there is a method behind this madness. the new agility stat thingy effects that and other things. the dark souls 2 wikidot has confirmed that with the corresponding stat at 21, shield draw speed is still slower than dark souls, but significantly improved over starting stats

Another one pops into the fight every time you take one down to half health. You always have to fight two at once, so it's best not to divide your attention and kill one ASAP as soon as a third one enters the fight.

It's a fight that can be pretty frustrating until near endgame when you can actually damage them fast enough to keep things under control/

So I was playing Dark Souls with Kaz co-op, and we got invaded.

But then suddenly, he disconnected. shortly thereafter, I got a message from my invader. He said "play offline." I thought it was weird, but I sent a message back saying, "no." Then I got one back that said "or die."

That made me laugh, so I sent a message back that said, "Come at me bro." It made my night.

adp's importance is a bit exaggerated. while i don't ignore it, i've put more into dex, vgr, and vit. and i've been doing fine.

also yeah you level up way faster.especially for like levels 1-70, you blaze through them with boss soul drops alone.  i'm level 99 and like 70% done (i think) with the main game.

i dunno. it's just suited to the types of weapons i prefer and therefore it's what i go with.

but apparently there's a type of buff in this game that makes it so pretty much any weapon can overcome its bad scaling in one stat or another. idk how it works though cause i haven't looked into it cause i don't really care lol

how'd you like it compared to the other two games
Title: Re: Dark Souls 2
Post by: Samus Aran on November 12, 2014, 12:40:52 AM
other two are definitely better. i don't really like how they overloaded thsi one with tons of bosses but then made so many of the bosses kind of throwaway and pointless, like the covetous demon you just fought. the lore is also less interesting and less fleshed out (not that it's super fleshed out in the previous games lol). atmosphere took a bit of a hit too.

it's a great game, just less inspired and interesting. some improvements are definitely there though, like an infinitely better menu system and more equip slots.

well I can't really find out right now lol. I'll tell you once I'm back home and i finish the last dlc.

BTW the weird ai is extremely obvious if you stand in the doorway leading out to the open area with the drawbridge leading to the smelter demon, and from there shoot an arrow at the knight standing on the drawbridge. This consistently caused his ai to go nuts for me, most often resulting in him continually running against a wall. Also once he just sprinted straight off the bridge into the lava

so what are you thinking about the game so far?

as for me, I've told kaz that I thought this was the best one gameplay-wise. like, the gameplay package itself.
the story and environments are better in the other two though

i would enjoy it more if i weren't constantly worried about my ever-increasing soul memory lol

but so far i have no other real complaints, and i think i'm still early enough that i haven't really had a chance to notice that the environments are consistently less impressive or that the story is somehow even less coherent

but worry not, my opinionated snobbery will shine through soon enough

well the story is always incoherent, but some think that the lore is less interesting, which I don't fully agree with.

and I still think the game has a great ambiance, but it's not as "unsettling" as the first two were, save for a few areas.

nice. that is pretty much the safest method. i didn't bother on my playthrough, nor did i do darklurker yet, but i may do both when i come back to the game at some point, before starting ng+.

ancient dragon can be an intimidating fight though because his fire breath is seriously like a one-hit kill lol

i equipped all of my my most flame-retardant armor (hexer set) and the flame quartz ring +2 and that was enough to just barely make it a two-hit kill lol

i finally managed to kill him
...but then i got hit by a stray fireball from his clone on the other side of the room and died just as their own death animation triggered (http://boyah.net/forums/Smileys/default/black.png)

and then it took another three attempts to finally kill him and live to tell the tale after that
honestly worse than ornstein and smough, and a huge contrast from the rest of the base game's relatively easy (for a souls game, at least) bosses

so many of my beautiful souls and human effigies, gone forever awdood;

i can't help but wonder why

ds1 just seems to have a much better balance of enemy/boss difficulty, and its overworld is more alluring, and at does a better job at incentivizing exploration without ever being tedious, and its pacing feels more consistent, and between the two games 1's storytelling is better (which is almost unfathomable considering that ds1's storytelling is probably its weakest point lol)

plus there's no soul memory to worry about, and if one's ever truly stuck or in dire need of a particular item they can freely farm without ever having to worry about enemy extinction

not to mention that the most useful upgrade materials are for the most part easier to come by in ds1, and i think its weapon upgrading mechanics in general are easier to get a grasp of than ds2's lol

disagree'd on both counts

mechanically and gameplay-wise, dark souls bests demon's in virtually every way

not to mention that it's easier (mostly due to simply better design) and thus better as a beginner's entry into the souls series

if anything, i'd argue that demon's should be played last lol (and actually i think i will go back and play demon's again after i'm done with ds2)

yep, absolute horseshit

let's make this area completely unnavigable with a blizzard that obscures vision beyond a two foot radius, and then spam the player with an endless barrage of powerful and completely inescapable enemies, two at a time, each of which can kill in two hits, and then we'll throw in some random low-level hollow so that the player accidentally targets them instead while dodging and ends up getting spammed and rammed from behind !!

managed to beat them back?? now you're completely disoriented and have to wait another five minutes for the storm to let up for ten seconds before you can get back on track, in which time another duo of enemies will spawn !!

a+ from shitware impeccable game design

you guys should take a look at the patch notes for the scholar of the first sin update

http://bandainamcous.tumblr.com/post/108136899811/attention-dark-souls-ii-fans-a-free-update-will

highlights include:

Quote
 • Added new character, The Scholar of the First Sin.

 • Choosing to enter the Covenant of Champions will now allow enemies to continue to respawn after being defeated.
 • Players will gain access to a new item: The Agape Ring. When players equip the new Agape Ring, souls collected from kills during online play will be absorbed by the ring rather than the player. This allows players to control their online matchmaking experience by limiting their total souls collected.

 • White phantoms will no longer return to their world if time runs out during a boss battle.
 • Made it easier for players to match online in general.

 • Calibrations no longer saved each time before the title screen.
 • Host vanquishes invading grey spirit (Bell Keeper): (1 of the following) Titanite Chunk, Titanite Slab, Twinkling Titanite, Petrified Dragon Bone.

it's going to be a very different experience the second time around lol

i will greatly appreciate no longer being restricted by soul memory limitations and the previously insurmountable scarcity of twinkling titanite

I fully plan to replay all of Dark Souls 2 after this update. I kinda want them to add a few new trophies also. I'll still have my plat so it would be cool to have some extra things to aim for

there is one time-sensitive addition: anyone who missed out on obtaining the limited edition special weapons like i did the first time around now has a new opportunity to pick them up from the chest in the majula mansion for a limited time, pick them up asap

it's probably because it's technically part of the environment regardless of who triggers it, so it's not any different from player/enemy triggered traps

adp's importance is a bit exaggerated. while i don't ignore it, i've put more into dex, vgr, and vit. and i've been doing fine.
it may be exaggerated, but it is still important. it makes everything you do, drinking estus, rolling, raising shield...... (dying, lol) faster.

i'm glad this shit isn't coming back in 3

just made it to iron keep and it's amazing how this game manages to be uglier than both of its predecessors. also why is there a boss every 5 feet?

that's why you only swing once at a chest. one hit is never enough to break a chest, but it's enough to reveal a mimic.

unless you're using some gigantic weapon maybe idk

Title: Re: Dark Souls 2

ok but there's repeating textures on tons of surfaces and the aesthetic design for half the levels seems to be "someone puked green sludge all over the walls" (and not just the black gulch where that actually happened). the graphics are, of course, objectively superior to demon's and dark's graphics, but where those games covered the ugly stuff up with strategic darkness, this game lays it all bare for some reason
Title: Re: Dark Souls 2

It's because you're playing the PS4 version. Wait, you are playing that version right??

But yeah on the PS3, the game was darker. For some reason they cranked up the brightness on the PS4 version so now you can see all the ugly textures. I noticed it right away the first time I saw it played, during the first boss.

They messed with all of the lighting

Brighter places are brighter
Darker places are darker.
