Turn on font smoothing.

When that command is used in the terminal, window should pop up.

Paste that in there and CTRL+S (save). Log out of Ubuntu and log back in, and it should be all smooth'd up.

although I don't really like the look of it on Ubuntu.

Change the icon theme. Maybe that'll help. Go to System > Themes > click customize > Icons > [chose icon set]. When you click on an icon set, you should get a live preview, so just toy around and chose what you like; I really like "Tango".

I've already toyed around with the theme. It's more just the background, I'm getting sick of it.
